I like both. I have both. Driftwood is a must. The royal is hardier and gets larger. Gold nugget not as hardy, striking in appearance when larger though. I keep veggies for my gold nugget and the temp is around 83F. Royal in community about 78F. Both are about a year old.

I have a clown, sailfin, butterfly, and gold nugget pleco. Take note that there are 3 different kinds of gold nuggets. I have the L177 which looks different and stays smaller than the L018. I have only had the nugget for a month so I couldnt give too much advice on him except provide driftwood and an ENCLOSED hiding spot. The nugget stays in his cave all day but comes out at night. This works out for me because I get home late so I get to see him active
The other plecos I have are great and have been very easy to take care of. The butterfly isnt very active at all. He hides all day AND night. He occassionaly comes out to grab an algae wafer but will bring it back into his cave he created under the driftwood. (I love when they create their own caves in the sand) My sailfin has been an awesome pleco and I've never had troubles with him. He is pretty active but they get very large. The clown pleco is a good one that stays small and has a nice pattern. Its been a good little guy. Keeps our 30 gallon insanely clean of algae. Never expected him to come off of the wood!
