i bought a gold nugget pleco from Petco a couple months ago. I was wondering how big they get and info on their growth rate. (fast or really slow?) Also do they do well with SA cichlids?

They are known to grow very slowly. Mine have grown about about an inch to two inches in the last year or so on blood worms, mysis, beefheart, massivore, krill, shrimp, etc. (whatever gets thrown in for the discus). I have wood in the tank, a pH of 6.3-6.6, a temp of 80-82 degrees, and low GH. They have plenty of hiding places, but there is LOTS of filtration. I never let the ammonia get high, and I keep nitrates slim to none. They live with my discus, and these are the only parameters I've been able to keep them alive for more than three months. I guess I've had them for at least 14 months. I have all three types of gold nuggest, and they all grow at different rates. The one with tiny spots grows VERY slowly like 3/4 of an inch a year. The one with the largest spots is a beefy guy probably growing more like 2 inches a year. So, it will depend on your fish and, of course, diet and water quality.

+1 ^

I've never kept gold nuggets but from what I've read here, they are a fairly sensitive pleco (apparently their natural diet consists of something we can't offer in an aquarium (right?)).

They should be fine with SA cichlids as far as I know...just make sure you don't get any that'll eat smaller tank mates (and make sure the gold nugget is big enough not to get outgrown quick enough to get eaten). Though I doubt that'll be an issue..

Ive been keeping my gold nugget for around 6 months. He eats algae wafers and whatever else hits the bottom (flake and micro pellets). I dont think he has grown since I got him, he is around 3-4".

They'll get up to 14". They are super slow growers like previously stated. Mine are with species of earth eaters and angels and there have been no problems.

thats impossible.. i've never heard of petco selling any pleco other than ur regular common plecos..

Mind giving us some pictures of it??? Love to see the little guy.. and ya. . gold nuggets are hard to keep.. very demanding.. so do becareful with them.

Yes Petco does sell them! what do think? Im an idiot? come on man. It was the only one in there and it cost me 42 bucks so yes they cost a lot but yes they do sell them at Petco if you are lucky enough to get one before they are gone

zucchini is the secret to get big plecos if thats what you're interested in

ill take some pictures tonight and post them

I was told they like to eat wood so some driftwood should be kept with them. At first I didnt have any wood so i got these catfish chips with mopani wood in them. Its done just fine
