Does anybody keep one? My LFS has one that I would really like to get,but I don't want to drop $50 on a fish I will never see. I hear they like to hide.

The one I had was out all the time. I think it might depend on what else you have in your tank. Worst case, you can almost always see them after lights out.
I have the similar L-177's and of the three I have one is out and about most of the time. They tend to be more bold as they get larger.
I've had many and never seen them really "hide" but they do of course like to get under things etc to eat at times (like most plecos) but should be out quite a bit.
Unless of course you have anything that it shouldn't be housed with and it is getting beat up/nipped etc.
