So I have been wanting a gold nugget pleco for awhile and my LFS actually got two in so I picked one up. My question then is there really any difference between all of the L#'s they use for these fish? I have seen them labeled as L18, L81, L85, and L177 and they seem to use the same pictures for each one.

They are all different species even though they look almost identical. Can you post pics of yours?

I'll try to grab a picture of it tomorrow after I get off work. It is always hard to get a picture of it since it loves to hide in my fake plants where the lighting is very poor.

Actually out of that list (L18, L81, L85, L177) they all belong to the one species (Baryancistrus xanthellus) except for L81, which wasn't included in the species when it was described.

I believe there are subtle differences between L18 and L177, max size being one of them, but L81 is considerably different with much finer spots.

Nice, l18

Thanks. It is supposed to be WC from Brazil. The guy at the store was extremely proud that he was able to get these in. I, however, am just glad that a store here finally got one that didn't want $80 for a 2" fish LOL.

Yes, they are awesome, my personal favorite is the 177, I have 3, about 5", very slow grower but active, they love their green peppers.

I have a Golden Nugget, and he's about 2 1/2 inches. I got him about 6 months ago, and I haven't seen any growth yet. He cost me $40 (which is about the average cost I've seen them go for in my neck of the woods). When I first got him, he used to swim all over the tank. As soon as I would turn the light on, he'd be sucking up and down the glass . Now, he just likes to stay hidden most of the time (I'll see him stick his head out from hiding when it's feeding time. He seems to have become the shyest of the bunch. I have 5 plecos in my tank (Golden Nugget, Green Phantom, Blue Panaque, Gold Tiger, and Tiger Sailfin), and the only one that I've seen growing is the Sailfin (from about 2 1/2 inches 7 months ago, to about 6 inches now).

How can you tell? I've had one for a month now, I've never seen him eat anything. Not once--ever.
