I really want a golden chinese wels for my 21,000 gallon koi pond (32.5 ft by 14.5 ft by 6 ft), but I am worried about the wels eating some of my koi.

I just started the pond, and I only have 2 large koi in at the moment. 1 17 inch male goshiki and 1 20 inch female showa.

Would a larger specimen try to eat the koi?

Thanks!

I've never kept a Chinese wels aka Silurus meridionalis. I'd guess it is similar to wels in biology. If their temperament and behavior are similar, then on paper, Chinese wels is a far better match for a koi pond than a wels because they grow to a far more manageable size.

If no tank mates fits in the catfish mouth, generally it is not at risk. Our hobby is full of surprises though. as they say, it is a gamble. They also say never trust a predatory catfish. I don't trust my wels and watching it very closely. Just because it hasn't attacked any tank mate in half a year or a year, doesn't mean it can't happen tomorrow.
