Golden Dorado, VATF and GATF together with Koi fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How's the current in the pond? ATF's require an extremely high amount of current which I'm pretty sure koi won't appreciate at all. Even though I've seen ATF's in low current tanks, they don't seem to do as well and become extremely skittish. Also what's the temp in the pond? These guys like it warm! Around the low to mid 80's. This all applies to the dorado as well except dorados can be true terrors. I hear more stories about them being killers than I do of them being docile.

The water current is different, the area around the "small water fall" is faster than the other side I guess. Im in Malaysia so the temperature should be ok.
Right now I will focus on ATF and Gar :D.

Btw I come across something called water conditioner/softener, may i know is it necessary to have it?

Thanks a lot for the input once again !!

Hmm yea.. I guess my 4'' will not have the intention to snack on 10'' Koi fish =S. I will update here when i release it to the pond :D.

But how powerful of a current? ATF's and dorados live in the extremely turbulent parts of the rivers including the white rapid parts. I don't know much about koi but would they be able to handle that much?

Hmm I'll give ATF a try in my pond once he reached 6''and see how it fit. Will update to this thread again :D Thanks for the input!

Gave up on Dorado for now. Will focus on ATF, Gar and my little alligator snapper.

Btw is it possible to kill at least part of the bad pathogen without actually killing the good bacterial?

I surely hope you're not keeping a gator snapper with these fish. That's guaranteed to lead to heartbreak.

Either keep predators or keep their prey. You will not be able to mix the toothy characins with the koi long term. You have a year at most before the ATF go from fin nipping to taking chunks out of the koi. In two years, all of your koi will be no more than ATF poop.

Everything involved with this scheme has the potential to be horrendously expensive. Don't waste your money.

No no.. gator snapper at different tank. Ahhh ok ok, I'll take on your advice! I'll try my best to get a new aquarium.

Here's some questions regarding ATF species,

I've done some reading on both version of ATF guide you created and the ATF that I prefer is Vittatus and Tanzaniae. However the owner doesnt know how to identify them.

So the only one I picked have these characteristics:-

1) Pronounced stripes(Sort of ended at the lateral line)
2) Some blackish/blueish color on the adipose fin(Not sure its tip or the whole fin)
3) Black edge covering the end of tail fin
4) Clear paired fins

And based on this.. I assume mine is either Vittatus, Tanzaniae,or forskahlii

And all the other have this characteristics:

1) Yellowish paired fins
2) Without the pronounced stripes
3) Quite shinning in gold color(Indication of a brevis?)
4) Kind of broad tail fin

Can you shed some light on ID of these ATF? Particularly those that I havent pick up.

Sorry for all the question :(
Thanks for your time and have a good day !
