golden dorado

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok thanks
I know this is an old thread but any update with the additional Dorado's. We have one and short of just adding Dorado's, which I'm hesitant to try for sake of it not working, I've concluded that nothing is going to work without introducing some serious potential risk. Either to the Dorado via a much larger fish or the other fish if they aren't big enough.

He's just too aggressive and the size of potential tank mates that we've tried hasn't deterred him. If they are larger he starts out timid but once he gets comfortable to them it's back to being the aggressor and and when he starts it's relentless.

Dorados only seem to work if there is a large, non-aggressive 'alpha' fish to play the role of peacekeeper in the tank. If one of the dorados can feel like it's the boss, it will result in dead fish.

DB junkie DB junkie probably has the most experience with comming Salminus on the board, maybe he'll chime in.

I figured as much, I know it's also the luck of the draw and temperament can vary from fish to fish. The family has accepted that it's pretty much a Trex exhibit, we did build a catfish tunnel out of PVC running the rear length of the tank and he's successfully housed with a catfish:)

I've been reading through the previous postings but always open to someone offering something not already posted or pointing me at a post I could have missed.

I shared the same thoughts.

In fact, I realized one of the missing species from my new comm tank might be a dorado LOL! And dorados are notorious for their behavior in community tanks.

I have a big red aro that is non belligerent most of the time but will not hesitate to give a good smacking to any tank mates that misbehaved.

One of strategies for successful monster comm that new hobbyists should be awared of.

Don't think an aro will stand a chance against a similar sized dorado..

Awesome fish. Evil tho, I've been so tempted as they are everywhere here atm...
How big do they get in home Aquariums?

havent read of one over 2' in home aquaria, but since they're so active they require a bit of space. Arapaimag had one in his 15k gallon that was 22" Liam had a similar sized one and theirs were frankies if I remember correctly. DB's brassies are around the 18" mark atleast by now.
