Golden Flowerhorn questions from a newbie

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A black background is still good for a certain kind of flowerhorn. Was is the faders that go good with black backgrounds? If so go get a nice one. I would also wait too, hell I've been wanting a FH for a month now and I got the space for it but I haven't found the right one. And I'm willing to wait till I do.

I have mine over black gravel with a blue background. None done peeling.

Interesting shape.. I'm guessing it's got some parrot :D

As for the whole fader deal, I guess I'm weetarded, still don't fully understand what it means.

So they lose colour when they are juvies and then they come back later?
So does that mean there are no 'white' FHs?
I'm probably wrong, and some of you are probably shaking your heads

Faders are FH's which express certain genes, by which at some point (usually in their early life) they "fade" or "peel" so that a much darker backgrond colour gets replaced with a much lighter colour, usually a golden yellow. this usually happens over a period of a few weeks to a couple of months. They can look really skanky whilst this is happening !!

The original golden FH you described honestly sounds ideal for you ! You like the personality .... which for me (and I think for you) is a big deal. For a wet pet it's a really key point. NOt sure of the prices in Canada, but it seems like $40 is not a lot of cash. A light coloured fish will also be seen much better in your dark background tank.
Certainly is worth taking a look at these other fish at the other shop though.

I wouldnt buy it for 25, but thats just me. I have been doing the Flowerhorn thing for so long I have contacts in Canda if your interested. Let me know

You wouldn't buy what, Musha? So far they haven't even posted a photo of the actual fish.

BTW - $40 is an excellent price for a decent fader, in Canada.

Unless you know someone breeding decent quality FH in Canada, there are no deals to be had, period. Most FH up here are WAAAAAAAAY overpriced, and/or the quality is so piss poor you might as well buy a RD/Midas cross for $10 at Petsmart. Some of the so called transhippers up here are also totally clueless, and I personally wouldn't trust most of them to be shipping me a fish of higher quality, especially not in colder weather. (as in right now)

If you are happy with your $40 fish, keep it, have fun with it, and save yourself the trip on the train. Those large adult fish most likely look like crap, and are most likely in overall poor condition. (and crammed into a 30 gallon tank)

BTW - black background is fine for FH, especially lighter toned fish such as faders.

The OP stated that the fader they bought is approx. 6". :)

Being the kind of person that I am, I am going to call the FH specialist (he's a very personable guy, known for having the cleanest tanks with excellent customer service in the area) and ask for a

1. Aggressive and a glass banger.
This is very important to me. Probably the reason why I chose FH over other options after seeing one. The meaner the better.
2. Male
3. At least 6"
4. Not short body
5. Also maybe not terribly too Trimac-looking

Over the phone while he's at his shop. If so, I'm going on the train.

If not, I'm going to walk for a half hour to yet another Arowana/FH specialist and see what's up there too.

If not, I'm going to the original store and coming home with that Golden female. I still like her because she definitely had some pearly looking specks on her body.

Regardless, getting a FH tomorrow :)
