I cant help you but peanut power can:)

Does it look like these guys? If so, its whats called a Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I' ...should be able to find MUCH more info with that....than golden pike. There are two common families of pikes (Crenicichla) in the hobby right now...Lugubris family and Saxatilis family. Granted there are other families, like Reticulata, Wallaci, and Acutirostris. Anywho, Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I' comes from the Lugubris family..which is my fav. family of pikes. They get larger, have brighter, bolder colors, and are just pimpin. They are also a bit more aggressive than other pikes. Lugubris pikes go through at least TWO color changes before they reach their adult coloration. What you see as a juv. is not what you will see as an adult in 80% of the cases. The golden/reddish color is juv. coloration. Subadult coloration is a bit more drab...then adult coloration comes in. Adult coloration is pretty boring for adult males, bein olive colored, yet still attractive. Females on the other hand get a red belly with olive to darker ends. Its very kewl lookin. Unfortuntely xingu I is among the more aggressive pikes. They are placid and laid back till, till they hit subadult. Then all hell can break loose. You just gotta plan your tankmates wisely. As a side note, pikes are HIGHLY conspecific...in other words...they SERIOUSLY do not like other pikes. You either have to keep them in pairs or solo, or in realllly large tankz...ie...250gal +...and even then it may be hard. They are great fish, with TONS of personality. My fav. outa all the SA cichlids...:D. Give them a try if you have a large enough tank, 100 and larger. Adults will easily reach 14"...;). Hope that helps...any more questions just ask.

Told ya LOL

That is what i have. The three fish get along really well together for now. They often hide together and stay close. We'll see what happens down the road. I probubly won't do anything till their mood towards each oyher changes. Thanks for the input it is very helpfull. I will get some worms this week. Thanks for the suggestions peanut :)

I have a "yellow" pike that looks very similar... I bought it about 2 years ago, at of all places, PetSmart. So far, it has a very cool, laid back personality. It's now about 4 inches. For Christmas, we got a 100gal tank and moved everybody into it.

I know there are a ga-zillion different varieties of pikes, but do you (peanut) know one that looks very similar to this, but is more "yellow" than "gold"? I have yet to find it on line. I saw a pic of a Venezuelan species that looked really close, but the guy said they were more green than yellow.

I am goign to try to have a picture of it in the near future.

Pikes vary in color depending on their collection area...;). Same species can be VERY different dependin on collection location. Just like pbass. It almost sounds like you have a dwarf though..lol...cuz...for two years, your pike should be quite a bit larger than 4". PetSmart sells practically only four types of pikes...Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela', Crenicichla sp. ' bellycrawler', Crenicichla sp. 'xingu I', and Crenicichla johanna. I'm gonna think its Crenicichla xingu I...but for being so small...i dunno.

this may have answered my question... my local fish store has what they are calling "yellow pike" and I was informed that they are dwarves. How big do the dwarves get? I was interested in buying a couple of these. Can you tell me anything about their behavior? Do they mess with plants like amazons or java fern?

I don't really know of any pikes that are dwarves that are yellow...thats why i was confused. Compressiceps is more greenish, and regani isn't yellow. I'm thinkin you guys are both thinkin of xingu I. Pictures never lie...;). And make things much easier. Pikes are great for planted tankz cuz they generally don't dig and leave plants alone...;).
