8" golden spilo in a 55 gallon wide - ample room for him to swim.

Temp. is at around 83 degree's.

Threw it in yesterday - added some gold fish today with no reaction - fish is definitely healthy.

How long can I figure on these guys acclimating properly?

83F is kind of high, may want to lower it a little.
what's your parameters like? turn the light off, that helps.
give it couple days and please take those feeder gold fish out, not healthy for your gold mac. (usually those are macs as true spilo is more rare).
8" fish in a 12" wide tank is kind of small I would say. a 18" width would be much better.

It's a 55 wide.

True spilo, has been kept in 83 degree water all it's life so I didn't want to change things.

Params. are fine - nitrate may be a little high - as far as using gold fish, I'm just trying to induce a feeding response, he was eating hikari massivore prior to the switch.

I've been reading that there can be a two week period between tank switches that they won't eat - I just find it kind of weird as he has no problems coming up to the glass and following me around the room.

sorry, I must mis-read the "wide" part.
if he's been eating hikari massivore prior to the switch then why change it. sometimes they are so used to eat pellets and won't touch feeders.
after I moved my rhom it didn't eat for almost 2 weeks, it's pretty normal for serra.
could be still adjust to the new surrounding and water. just starve it for couple days then try some pellets.
you know what you need to do now, need to post some pics of that true spilo, I haven't seen one that big yet, all the ones I've seen were Mac.

I'll get some pictures up in a few days after the fish settles in, right now it likes to sit back in a corner and starts breathing hard when I'm in the room for a while - although it will come out and chase me down some times as well.

I tried dropping hikari massivore in there, it inspected it then ignored it - hence the gold fish.

It's still not eating - though I've found two gold fish bit in half, hehe.

It looks exactly like the larger ones on this page:

That link will need to be copied and pasted.

Photo of it in it's old tank.

If I'm mistaken on it's ID please let me know a full scientific name of what it actually is - as well as noted characteristics to tell the difference. :)

Man I am not a serra expert but that doesn't look like a golden spilo.... maybe because the pict is not to good, anyway who knows...

As you were told I also think the temp is too high, If I were you I would get the temp diminished, I bet you don't know the Spilos is one (if not the only) piranha spicies capable to tolerate very low temperatures, even below 16°C.

So I think 23°C to 26°C would be great for your P'.

Cheers.

I'm definitely no pirahna expert - as I said it looks exactly like the ones I posted in the link above, not just the crap photograph.

Thanks for the info on the temperature - I just assumed that since they're a tropical species they enjoy the warmer waters that most other tropicals do.

If they can really handle those kinds of temperatures I may just pull the heater from my tank.
