I'm definitely no pirahna expert - as I said it looks exactly like the ones I posted in the link above, not just the crap photograph.

Thanks for the info on the temperature - I just assumed that since they're a tropical species they enjoy the warmer waters that most other tropicals do.

If they can really handle those kinds of temperatures I may just pull the heater from my tank.

Actually I have just had this chattering with some piranhakeeper mates from Argentina who claim that in some rivers from the mentioned country which temperatures fall even close to 10°C in winter, spilos are commonly found.

I was really surprised because I had no info about any P's spicies that can live and yet to thieve under such cold conditions.

This guys are serious P' keepers and are even taking an study about this issue for an University in Argentina.

So, based on this I guess you can turn the heater off during the hot months just be aware your tank temp don't fall beyons 22°C.

Although it is supposed the spilos can live under very cold conditions remmember that P's get letargic and decrease their methabolism and eat less, and everybody here likes the feeding frienzy!!!:naughty:.

Cheers.

Photo of it in it's old tank.

If I'm mistaken on it's ID please let me know a full scientific name of what it actually is - as well as noted characteristics to tell the difference. :)

man I really can't tell what it is. It looks gold. It's a nice looking serra, but I can't see the caudal fin which is key to identifying spilo (for me anyways). Really nice fish anyway.

that looks like mac

your saying fish in video is mac? I thought that too based on a comparison of the caudal fin pattern in the video and this pic:

DSC01432.JPG

S. spilopleura, on the caudal fin, has a band of hyaline tissue,, a "mid" ban of dark tissue, then a terminal band of hyaline tissue. The fish in the video has a terminal band of dark tissue. I don't know if that's conclusive for man vs spilo. I'm no expert, and I aint gonna tell you your fish isn't what you think it is. Its pretty awesome whatever it is.

I'm not an expert in pirahna so who knows - cichlids are my gig. I'm leaning towards mac, it doesn't have red eyes - nor the red coloration in the fins.

in all fairness I don't honestly know if the red eyes, anal fin stick around as they develop. If you say spilo I'm going with spilo. Just interesting...

If you read up on em' on the site I posted it pretty much states that they lose all of that colouration into adult size - which was why I was leaning towards spilo in the first place...but everyone on here says different, or doesn't? I don't know, how experienced are the people posting that it's a mac with spilo's and mac's?
