ok makes sense when i had mine i didnt see to much aggression with them but then a gain they werent breeding!

how big till breeding age!?

where'd you get them? lfs? website!?

Mine aren't breeding yet but I think that comes at about 3 or 4". Both my comps and my BF's calvus (bought at the same time and from the same source) are exhibiting pre-spawning behavior. Males aggressively defending their territories against other males (no room for 2 in a 4' tank), digging out a spawning site hidden away in the rocks, trying to put the charms over on the ladies. Just no actual deed yet. I'll assume it done if/when the female goes missing. :naughty:

We got our Altos from a retailer who specialized in African cichlids. The place was actually moving and everything had to be sold so everything was selling for pretty cheap. We bought our Alto's for $4 a piece at about 2". :D

They are harder to come by at stores, or at least a varity of them are. If you do they are often small or expensive. It may take 1-2 years for small ones to grow to 3-4 inches. I have not seen any that small mate, but they are more like preteens. They show the behavior with no clue what to do. Then when 5 inches hit I have seen it done. Be careful mixing different altos comps or calvus. They can cross bread and you will not get the results you want. IF you want to breed stick to one type. Otherwise get a few males and put them in a mixed show tank.

Gold head are their ownl variant.
Comps generally come in brown, orange/red, goldhead/goldface and firefin.
Calvus come in black, black inkfin, yellow and white.
My boyfriend has a pair of yellow calvus in his other 50gl, same age/size. Different but I prefer the comp's color. Some whites would be nice though. :D
