Dogs, cats, and horses aren't the only animals that are abused and abandoned!
I used to live in a condominium with dumpsters at one end of the parking lot. My dad was taking out the trash one day and found a five gallon tank COVERED in algae to the point where you couldn't see through it. He came and got me, and upon further inspection, there were still live fish in it! Big ones too! There's two things wrong there. The first is that someone left 3 healthy fish out to cook in the sun because they didn't want to clean the algae. The second is that 2 large goldfish (One was about 4 inches, the 6) and a zebra danio were kept in a tiny 5 gal.
Luckily, we had a 16 gal set up for goldfish anyway that was waiting to be stocked. We rescued them, set them down in the tank, and gave them some stress reliever. I think the larger one had heat poisoning or brain damage, as he would swim in laps of one definite path about 40 or 50 times (i counted).
It was bottom right, top left, bottom left, bottom right, top left, bottom left, bottom right, top left, bottom left over and over again. The smaller one looked a little weak right from the start and wasn't very active, but he lasted a while. The goldfish lasted for about 6 months, the larger outliving the smaller by a week or two. The danio did very well and lasted for another year in a community tank.
It really annoys me how ignorant people are. I wanted to walk right up to the owners and
them away.
