GOLDFISH ABUSE!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is a great topic. 5 stars.
What I CAN'T STAND is when goldfish are treated as feeders in pet shops. I've seen them shovel unmeasured amounts of aquarium salt into the tank, I've seen them scrape dead or half dead goldfish off the filter (yes they even have a specially designed tube that grabs the floaters.
At the Staten Island Zoo they have a beutiful big Killifish that was put in with tjhe Oyster Toadfish as a feeder when he was tiny but was smart enough to stay off the bottom. Now he's part of the exhibit.
I also have seen how fish are thought of as less than cats. As a fish lover who has to look away when a fisherman puts his soon-to-be- dinner in a bucket, I get really mad. People including DECKHANDS ON PARTYBOATS will fillet a fish alive. This is on TOP because it's actually. Illegal for commercial fisherman to do this.

we need more New Jerseyians like you and less like that other j/o that threw the fish out. he most likely put them there knowing that you were a fish person assuming you would take them.

Little Comet goldfish I think are the most overlooked FW fish due to their stigma as being feeders. I think they are cool as hell. Yes, they occasionally see the inside of a predator or two that ive kept, but Ive also kept them in community tanks. They are actually pretty interesting to watch, can be absolutely beautiful, and really do develop personality. Go "rescue" a couple from the feeder tank and set them up in a community tank. I bet youll fall in love with them in no time!

They make excelent algae crews in community tanks.

I dont have a problem with feeder or eating them for that matter, but tossing them in the dumpster is wrong. Its still a living thing killing them for no reason is wrong.Glad you saved them

I run the Sonoma County GoldFishRescue@yahoo.com. I was the Rohnert Park Animal Shelter Manager for 14 years as a youth. My best friends cousin Shirley Hooker(on my facebook) is an animal control officer so I have quite a few connections when it comes to the rights of animals. Not only do the big box stores mistreat there "feeder fish" they also bring about disease causing conditions to those they would be fed to including zoophytic diseases. I know Shirley frequently uses the potential of disease transfer from diseased fish as an angle to get the operation shut down. If the conditions are bad enough she will euthanize the entire lot using clove oil. Recently in my county there has been alot of Siamese fighting fish fights and the local fish stores have been refusing to sell to people of Siamese decent. One racial bias I don't mind perpetuating.
