Hello,

Why are goldfish still being given away at the fair? If someone tried to give away kittens of puppies then everyone would complain, but because it is a fish then they think it does not matter.

Thank you for letting me rant.

Actually, I think that people would be delighted for a chance to win a one dollar puppy or kitten.

Goldfish (or baby carp, which usually ends up at my fairs) are just convenient and appealing to youngsters.

It's a lousy custom, but there are worse being done in local fish stores.

i dont have a problem with it to be honest flame away

It's done because what young kid will not grab their parents hand saying "look look a goldfish mommy. I want one!". It gets the kids attention to see a real live fish, and knowing that the kid can win it because HE threw the ball in the small container would make any kid happy. IMO.

my first fish was a goldfish I won at a fair . . . doesn't seem any more inhumane than feeding them to other fish

I like fish, I really do, but I do not remotely equate fish with cats/dogs . . .

same with me but that cat...i think i like my fish better than that little fluff ball i woke up one night when he was clawing at my toes and made me bleed...

my friend has 2 she won, she keeps them in the smallest tank ever, even though i have offered her a 55gal coz they r huge and badly stunted.
she wont change them because they r 13 years old and thinks if she changes them they will die from shock.
its horrible!!!

I dont like that 99% of those goldfish will end up in unfiltered bowls and will probably die within a couple months, but I saw one of those stalls 3 years ago, won a goldfish and ended up with 9 tanks in about 8 months.
If I hadnt won that goldfish I wouldnt be a hobbyist.

All the people I know use it for feeders for their monsters so I really don't care.

thats how i got started in the hobby i won 2 but forsome reason they started in a 5gallon then got bigger got them a 10gallon then got them a 20 so then we decided to get a 40 and they ended up being 8" and the other like 7" !?!?!? but then they died soon after we had to move. to much stress i guess.... Then came the era of catfish....
