Experience is just from keeping a few here and there. So not much experience. IDK, some just look a little weird with the brain like masses on top of their head and the plain goldfish.
You're referring to orandas. I keep six orandas and four are already massive. The brain like masses are called wen growth or simply wen. This is just a goldfish lingo similar to "kok" with flowerhorns. There are three types of wen identified: goosehead (only on the head), tigerhead (covers the cheeks as well) and lionhead (less wen growth on head and more on cheeks).

While massive wen growths are desirable, they can also obscure the eyesight of some fish if the wen starts covering their eyes but this can be remedied by trimming it carefully. Personally, I'd let a fish specialist or vet specializing in fish do that job as it is a very tricky process involving sedation as well.

Protein loaded diet is one way to acquire the wen growth you desire however in cases involving young goldfish, it is always much better if the body starts developing first before the wen does. I actually prefer the fish grow this way and one of my orandas is growing his body first before the wen. If you notice white patches on the wen, they're not something to be concerned of as they are merely wen growths. Same with the white tubercles (pimples) that grow as rings around the eyes and then the gills. They're just a sign of breeding conditions rather than anything else.

I must say though I do like the black ones with the bubbly eyes. How big do they get? I wouldn't mind having a 55 of them with a white background.:) But the other ones just either freak me out or just look plain, IDK maube it's because their orange.
10-12 inches. Unfortunately, black is a very unstable color wherein the goldfish eventually sheds it to be replaced mostly by orange. This is typical of black moors. My new oranda has black but also orange sheen developing under her belly. My black ranchu is also developing a more orange appearance. Oddly, my other black oranda remains the same but with "platinum" scales under her belly. It's not just environmental factors that influence the changes but also genetics and foods.

I like tosakins. I've never seen one in any of my LFS though! :(
Try the raingarden.us which is located in Hawaii. Steve is the owner of that site. He sells tosakins at $30 I believe. The trouble with tosakins is that their tails are prone to fin curl especially when the water is not kept shallow. Their fused tails make it very difficult for them to compete very well with other fish for food as it impairs their swimming ability. Just another reason why I tend to avoid goldfish with fused tails. It's not just tosakins that have the fused tails. Even some demekins do.

I think the only moment i would like a gold fish is when a Pbass goes after it.. but otherwise.. i freaken hate those fish...

Why? There really is no personality in them.. and yes i've had gold fish before.. 13 years ago to be exact.

I've noticed many MFKers listed goldfish as their least favorite fish/one they dislike/.I've often noticed people responding negatively to goldfish in general on here. .I am curious why so many people dislike goldfish?.

-Is it because they are peaceful ,non predatory fish?.
-Is it because they are bred sometimes with extreme body modifications?.
-Is it because the basic single tailed goldfish are dirt common as feeders?.
- Is it because goldfish are considered noobie fish and no serious and or experienced fish-keeper wants to be keeping such a fish?.
-Is it because goldfish have been kept by people for a long time and thus not as exciting as keeping some newer fish species?.

I actually switched from tropicals to golds because I found the tropicals to be too neurotic. They freaked if anyone walked by dressed in yellow... Heck, if anyone walked by. It was comical, actually.

But I found that the goldfish I've kept over the years have had wonderful personalities, like golden retrievers.

Some of the extreme varieties of fancies I find similar to looking at pugs (and what's that cat with the mashed face?) or other breeding versions of the train wreck, but Comets, Shubunkins, even Commons are soothing and beautiful to look at (though I'm partial to those with gorgeous long tails), and the Ranchus, Lionheads, and Orandas have grown on me. My kids call them "brain fish", and to me, the wens look like afros. LOL...

But to each their own, of course. :)

One thing we goldfish owners probably have in common with all other true aquaria enthusiasts, is the lack of consumer education so blatantly apparent about goldfish. A goldfish in a bowl? In less than a 20 gallon tank? Ugh. I know they certainly share this problem with koi --- and from my (limited) understanding of koi, that poor fish has it even worse off than golds!

I've heard 1 koi needs 1000 gallons to live properly... But I would guess that if 1 gold needs a minimum of 20, perhaps 1 koi would suffice with 55 gallons?

:)

glad someone has re posted this...there is no reason to hate on golds i'm about as experienced as you can get and I still love a good goldfish.
