What's with all the hating on goldfish?
1. Goldfish brought you into this hobby.
No, they didn't.
2. Goldfish made this hobby much more popular.
Sure, but it more or less brought more idiots here who think they can keep any fish in a bowl and it won't grow that large in there.
3. Goldfish are just like any other fish.
Except that they are mutants. Saying that goldfish are like any other fish would be like saying snowflakes are all alike. Have you even seen the extreme diversity of fish there actually are, hell, some fish can even breathe air.
For an inexperience goldfish keeper and an untrained eye of a person looking at a fancy goldfish...they all are ugly to YOU. Me personally, I think they are pretty cool. Goldfish are not made to be monsters and eat this and kill that and fight that. Goldfish are made for looks as part of a house decoration. Heck, this hobby started out as a home decoration only but it got so popular it turned into a hobby.
For an experienced hobbyist, and a trained eye to research and details, goldfish ARE ugly. But it is true that is in the eye of the beholder, so if you are into keeping goldfish, have at it. When you say goldfish and fish in general are made/kept for decoration, IS the reason that our hobby has been degraded for those that actually enjoy their fish and provide for them CORRECTLY.
Word for word, selective breeding of goldfish is to make them look much more cute and cooler than the previous plain ole goldfish. I can understand why most people bash on goldfish, because they are not monsters...well, what does monster has anything to do with having a fish to be aggressive, real great personality that EVERYONE can notice, being very picky about food etc etc etc. Aren't GIANT SIZE goldfish is suppose to be classified as a ]\/[ONSTER?
I see what you are saying here, I guess a large goldfish would be ]\/[onster, but how often do you see one over 9" even? But did goldfish start off BRIGHT ORANGE? No, they started off silvery grey. How often do you see a bright orange shiny pig, cat, cow, or dog.
AND about non native species in the pond and being scared that the fish might escape into the wild, WHAT KIND OF UNEDUCATED THINKING IS THAT? First of all...if the fish is able to escape into the wild and take over the damn entire river or lake or ecosystem. I don't think the fish would be legal in the first place. Example: Piranhas being illegal in California because they can thrive in the water.
Goldfish could ruin an ecosystem. They feed off of microorganisms and plant matter. They root around on the bottom, stirring up the sediment, causing a lack of photosynthesis, thereby removing the bottom of the food chain. When you introduce a non native fish, very rarely can any good effects occur. And for piranhas: Piranhas could not survive California's winter. It just wouldn't happen. The reason they were banned is because people are uneducated. It wouldn't take more than 15 minutes to learn that they couldn't survive our winter due to their temperature requirements.
What the hell does a goldfish going to do in the wild? Eat every single species and compete out against the other? Is a goldfish really that aggressive and will kill and ruin the entire ecosystem? Or is the goldfish even going to last a week in the river/lake water system before getting eaten' by a bass or a catfish? I don't know...you tell me.
Bottom line is, goldfish are cool to their own perspective...suck it up and start training the inexperience keeping of goldfish and untrained eye of goldfish keeping. Have a nice day...and night
You're completely correct here, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when there is such a broad range of natural fish, you are just disrespecting them by pretty much saying they are not up to your standards and so you take a man made fish. I have kept goldfish before and for a while, they did not spark my interest in the hobby or even get me into it. The biggest one I had was reaching 9" and they just couldn't give me what I wanted out of them, so I switched to colorful predators like peacock bass.
