Goldfish question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I wish I remembered the name of the guy on this site that is all about goldfish... he's got some huge fancy ones and some great videos of them... they keep their same body ratio... so they're huge, fat and heavy fish. Definitely a huge bio load... once a few years old the two will be pushing that 40.

I know who you are talking about and I can't remember either. I though for sure he would have chimed in.

Pretty sure it was readersunfish.

My kids have two gold fish ( 1 black moor and 1 fantail) in a 20 long. I am upgrading them to a 40 breeder this week.

The fish are 3 years old so I have been meaning to upgrade them for a while. My reason for asking these questions now is I don't want to have to upgrade again.

Questions
1. How many gold fish can I have in a 40b can I add 1 or 2 more?
2. Can a common gold fish go with my fancy gold fish?
3. Are there plants that work with Gold fish?

1. With over filtration and plenty of water changes and light feedings, you can keep your two fish in a 40 breeder. However I have to suggest you get a 65 instead.
2. Yes, possibly - but common shaped goldfish tend to be boisterous and sometimes aggressive - so its situational. I had a common shaped goldfish that couldn't be trusted with any other goldfish. I'd say its situational. I wouldn't keep a common shaped goldfish with a moor or celestial or ranchu or lionhead, but I would keep one with a low grade ryukin.
3. Yes, as salad for the goldfish they work fine. :) Otherwise you could try your luck with anubius or plastic plants.

A further thought on what I would do just to be clear.

1. Any more goldfish? No.
2. Common shaper Goldfish with fancies like moors and fan tails? No.
3. Plants with goldfish? No. Unless you have a pond where the plants can rebound from grazing.

Hey! There he is! lol...

Good point about aggressiveness. For a site that is geared toward predatory fish, not much love is given to the 'ol common goldfish. The two I have are by far the most aggressive fish in the tank which is crazy when I have foot long cichlids and some half foot chocolate cichlids. They would suck the slime off other fish if they sat still even.

Yup most goldfish do not have an on-off switch, and aggressive common shaped males can severely wound a bulbous bodied fancy goldfish in mere days.

Thanks allot good info. How long will they be ok in 40b until I need a 65? I have a spare 40b at the moment.

I think i answered this, but i haven't been on for a while, so i'll answer again.

1. 2 fancies max. (i'd advise a 65 vs the 40. the same footprint but more water :)
2. It depends on the individual fish. I've found the answer to be no more often than not due to aggression levels and the common's superior physical abilities.
3. Again it depends. I'd say not really. You could try java fern or anubias.

I just read up in this thread and realized I answered. but its cool to see my answer hasn't changed and i've actually refined my thoughts. :)

A upgrade to a 75 gallon tank would be good in that a 75 gallon tank is only a few inches bigger in each direction then a 40.

I have kept Black Moors and comet goldfish in the same tank. and they did fine. The biggest thing with goldfish is they get big fast. I have four eight inch big goldfish living in a 75 gallon tank.
As soon as I move I'm going to buy them a 800 gallon tank before I add two Black Moors and two Fan tail goldfish.
