My dad has a 50gal goldfish tank in the living room that has 4 goldies. This past week, I noticed that one of them had white scales all around its dorsal fin. The flash of white is what caught my attention because all four goldies are pure orange. The next day, I noticed it looked a little peculiar, but I blew it off thinking it was just shedding as they tend to do that from time to time.It wasn't until today that I realized the scales were no longer on at all. It's a patch of skin (looks like the scales were ripped off like they were fingernails) and the scales seem to be attached to each other just trailing along on its back. I don't have any pictures of the goldfish unfortunately.
There has been nothing in the tank but the rocks at the bottom since this past may and it was perfectly normal before this past week. My dad got some tablets called Lifeguard. I told him not to put them in just yet until I knew what was wrong, but I can't find anything online about stripped scales. I know it could be possibly caused by fungus, but I've never heard of fungus actually tearing scales off a fish
