I am friends with a goldfish breeder in Florida that has all sorts of goldfish. I'm not too good with the names, but I know he has koi, wakins, comets, various orandas, and just about every other kind I have heard of.

I met him through craigslist when my RD needed a new home. He has tons of tanks and ponds that he just sets up in his backyard, so I give him my fish when they get too large or when I have too many fry. I have also taken him and his 4 kids collecting (fish survey/invasive removal) in a local state park. One of his kids even decided to go to college after seeing the adventures I get to go on.

He's given me a couple of fish and fish accessories too, but he said that when I return to Florida I can pick any goldfish I want that isn't a main breeder to thank me. I have never been too big on goldfish, but I have kept them. I usually like the more normal-looking ones, but the biggest tanks I have now are 55's.

I want to see some goldfish suggestions! I don't know all of the names so I can't make a poll. I just have to trust you MFKers!

For a 55g, stick with two or three short-bodied goldies to keep maintenance easy. Any type that has a generally round shape won't get a huge as a common, comet, shubunkin, etc.

See if he has a veil tail. They are great to sit and watch when adult with fins like waterfalls. Or a lava lamp-like sway.

For a 55g, aim for the fancy goldies. No singletails (although wakins, watonais and jikins are not and nevertheless, still too big for a 55g). A 55g should house 4-5 fancies appropriately. Ideally, look into orandas, ryukins, fantails, lionheads and ranchus.

True veiltails are very rare. They should not have forked tails.

would a koi grow too fast? or would I be able to have it for a couple of years.

Koi are better off in ponds even at a small size. They are never meant to be aquarium fish especially with the bioload they produce.

get some orandas lionheads and ranchus :D

panda orandas, and pealscales are 2 of my favorites. =) I had a single Panda for about 5 yrs in a 40breeder and it got huge ( unfortunately lost him to ingested air =( ). imo I'de get a single really nice one and keep just it in a 55.

Maybe I'll just say no thanks then. I feel like my options are the elephant men of fishes.

Unless there are some good tankmates I could also watch. I wouldn't mind having one "fancy" goldfish as well as other things in the tank!

I love orandas. I had two for years.. until they passed from old age.
