I'd pass on the goldfish and just thank him again. You may need more than a favor from him sometime in the future.......

Get and oranda, ranchu, or a ryukin! I personally love ryukins :D

I like goldfish a lot, just like some other fish more so I don't have the tank space. You can keep other fish with them...minnows and danios seem popular, dojo loaches, hillstream loaches, etc. A lot of barbs can tolerate lower temps but you just want to make sure they aren't too nippy.

I like orandas and ryukins, but from what I've seen, ryukins tend to get ugly and deformed as they age. I was at an lfs last fall and they had a huge oranda (easily over 10") that I would love to have, but unfortunately I don't have the space for another large tank.

I am friends with a goldfish breeder in Florida that has all sorts of goldfish. I'm not too good with the names, but I know he has koi, wakins, comets, various orandas, and just about every other kind I have heard of.

I met him through craigslist when my RD needed a new home. He has tons of tanks and ponds that he just sets up in his backyard, so I give him my fish when they get too large or when I have too many fry. I have also taken him and his 4 kids collecting (fish survey/invasive removal) in a local state park. One of his kids even decided to go to college after seeing the adventures I get to go on.

He's given me a couple of fish and fish accessories too, but he said that when I return to Florida I can pick any goldfish I want that isn't a main breeder to thank me. I have never been too big on goldfish, but I have kept them. I usually like the more normal-looking ones, but the biggest tanks I have now are 55's.

I want to see some goldfish suggestions! I don't know all of the names so I can't make a poll. I just have to trust you MFKers!

For a 55g tank, three to five Lionheads........OR........two Orandas.......Use pea gravel from Home Depot, really inexpensive($4 for 25lbs........)Get a bunch of fake tall plants---Vallisernia, Hornwort.............If you can afford it, get a system for live plants--CO2 and light fixtures..........Filtration, an Aqua CLear 101($79.99)........Do 50% water changes every week........
