Hello,
I have a tank with several fish in it, including 2 juvenile Oranda Goldfish. A couple of weeks ago my tank had an ammonia spike and I immediately treated it with seachem Prime and it seemed like the fish were all fine. However, I noticed one of my goldfish developed some black spots, first on her tail fin, then after another day it started showing on one side and a bit around her mouth. I thought this was due to the ammonia spike and perhaps she had ammonia burns that were healing, however NONE of the other fish have been affected, not even the other Oranda. They are all juveniles(not sure if that makes much difference in their tolerability of tank parameter changed). The goldfish seemed a bit sluggish for a day or two, but since has been totally normal in eating and everything else. However, after about 3 days of noticing the first black spots on her tail, her scales on the side that had the burn marks all fell off(where there were black scales, not the healthy scales). However, this does account for more than half of the scales on that side. I have been dosing the water with melafix to help prevent infection. Every couple of days I notice some red marks like she's maybe rubbing her side on something, but they heal up overnight. The scales have not started to grow back yet, it has been about a week since I noticed her scales gone. There are no Plecos or any fish in my tank that would eat slime coat, nor any aggressive fish and i've not seen any of my fish bothering any of the others, so I don't think this was done by another fish.
Is it possible the scales fell off from the burns? The only black marks left on her is a bit on her tail fin. The black around her mouth has totally gone. Like I said, she is acting totally normal and eating well, so i'm not immediately concerned for her health, I'm just not sure if this could be ammonia burns since no other fish were affected, or should I be looking for other possible causes??
(The results I put in for testing are from when I noticed the ammonia spike. The current levels are back to normal range)
