I recently became interested in raising fish so I bought a 10 gallon tank for my room. I bought some random fish to start off with. One fantail, one dalmation molly, a pair of little 26 cent goldfish ( about 1" long), and I bought this pair of golfish that looks like the little ones but were $6 dollars each and are about 5" long. I was looking at them today wondering if there was any way to tell the difference between male and female between either of the pair. I noticed right infront of the back fin on one of the larger goldfish there is a small bump you can barly see. Is this a sign of a male or female? The other one doesnt seem to have this bump. Is there any other way to tell if they are male or female? Also if so how often do they spawn? If I can get these to breed I would buy a couple more tanks and raise freshwater fish to start with. Any help with these questions?

1- Welcome
2- Buy a larger tank, preferably a pond for those comets
3- Buy another tank so you can separate the tropical from cold water fish

will they not breed in a 10 gallon tank or its to small? Also any idea to tell the sex.

a comet gets up to 12" long and gold fish need 2 gal per inch to deal with wastes so once they are grown the comets will need at least a 50 gal by them selves.
I strongly suspect the two 6$ "gold fish " are koi they need a pond and I would return them unless you can build one .
Get a least 75-90 for the fan tail and the comets or a large kiddie pool.
keep the molly in the 10 add some aquarium salt about 1tsp per gallon I think and a heater ~78 farenhiet is the proper temp and get it a molly friend or 2 those will have fry.molly girls have wide triangle looking anal fins males have long pointed anal fins. search molly sexing you will find pics
i can't sex the goldfish

ok I can do that. I been having all these fish together for about a month or so and found this webiste so I wanted some info.

When male goldfish are ready to breed, white bumps will appear on their gill covers and the edge of their pectoral fins. Not sure about females...

It's been said, but you need a lot of room to breed goldfish.

Listen to the cute Canadian, she's right. :) You could also try a trio of platys, but you will need fry tanks for babies. (Additional tank also eventually needed for guppy fry.)
