What kind of fish can i put gold fish with? I was thinking of a bichir but my friend said that's not a good idea

What size tank do you have & what filtration?

If you are not overstocked, then you could add weather (dojo) loach, apple snail, mystery snail, or a bristlenose (rubbernose) pleco - what you have to remember with goldfish is that they get seriously large, and any other small fish will become lunch.

Do not add Koi to your tank, and try to avoid single tails unless your tank is huge and long.

Thanks everyone! I have a normal filter, for a 10 gallon, and I clean my tank pretty often so it doesn't get too dirty. My mom got me this shubunkin goldfish (about 2") to put with my bichir and goby, but my friend said that it'd pollute the water too much and put the bichir in serious danger (the slime coat would kind of wear away), so sadly I gave her back last night :( would it have been okay to keep the shubunkin?

You did a right way by give it back to where it come from. On other note, a 10gal isn't good setup for the bichir and the goby (assuming that you have a dragon goby). Both needs to be upgrade to bigger tank in future.

I'm trying to look for a nice upgraded one, at a good price...people have been saying 55-75gal. ones would be best

Try 75g. And shubs should be kept at a minimum number of three, no less than that. Even three require a 75g minimum at least to be able to swim freely without additional fish. Nearly all singletails (comets, common goldfish, shubs) grow to 18 inches max. Though it is not often achieved, we should not try to limit the goldfish's potential to grow to its adult size. They also require plenty of space and are best kept in ponds in the long run. Same with slender bodied doubletails such as wakins and watonais.

As with fancy goldfish, it depends which fancy type you get. Orandas, ranchus, lionheads, demekins/black moors and fantails can reach 12 inches. The smallest is a Siamese doll at 6 inches which is very hard to come by unless you are lucky enough to come across one. Fancies in general are more delicate than singletails and fit the tank better. In tropics, they can be raised in ponds.

another gold fish or wit koi...

Koi are not aquarium fish. Considering their massive size and bioload, an average tank size is not an option for them. They are better off in ponds.
