How is this controlling our lives completely? They can still go to pet stores and buy goldfish if they want, but someone who at least is a bit serious about keeping fish in the first place will go, as opposed to, "Oh, they were giving out fish as prizes... and they were free, so that's why I took it."

Im sorry but when a government goes as far as telling you what you can and cannot give out as a carnival prize they have gone to far IMO... the world as we know it is compleatly messed up our countries are falling ever deeper into debt without a light at the end of the tunnel and you want to goverment to worry about what prizes are acceptable to give away at carnivals? I mean really this is the kind of thing you want goverment involved in? I mean really the role of goveremnt is to dictate what prizes are given out at carnivals??? Really?

of course, your right. i mean who cares if animals die everyday because some dooch keeps them out in the sun all day long without fresh water. i guess they should start giving away puppies, keep them in a small pen they can barely turn around in without fresh water and in the sun all day. eventually they die through exposure but thats ok because the government is looking at more important things so stuff the little laws that define you as a good or bad society.

the role of a government is to govern and create laws for its people to abide by therefore creating a civilised society. i know some people think "its only a fish, it feels no pain", but keeping in a fish in a tiny bag for a couple of days till it dies or is won is hardly civilised.

Thanks for your responces guys :D I posted this same thread on two reefing forums.... they didn't actually seem to care that much, saying 'it got me in to fishkeeping, and it lived for a few years'..... they can live for 20 years, and this practice is very cruel... small minded fools. And i dont see it at all of going too far.

I understand alot of this is cruel practice, but i guess it got alot of people into this hobby. Not saying that it is right for the poor goldfish, i do keep some myself. I will sign it though

Giving away live animals as a prize is (and sorry if i offend anyone) plain stupid.
If people want to have a pet, they should carefully consider it on their own, not just randomly win a live animal as a prize, whereas the person who wins it probably knows nothing of what it takes to keep that pet. May it be a goldfish, a chicken, a puppy or whatever. Its a living thing...its not an item that can just be put aside.

I wouldve gladly signed, but im not in the uk.

And it has nothing to do with the government owning our lives...its about protecting animals from being treated like a toy.

This topic reminds me of when some *******s at a local fair took prize goldfish on one of those rides that spin really fast and make you stick to the wall. Poor fish...
