Goliath rubbing against glass HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had to put him in a 35 gallon tank for 10 days and then he is getting a 300 gallon tank with a 4000 gph power head. The filters are cyceling as we speak so they will be ready when the tank comes. So this "holding" tank does not have the ideal flow. The only tank mates are the neon tetra that he has to munch on. Jhonny that is a good point! I will try adding some tank mates. Any ideas on what i could put in with him for the time being?

Tinfoil barbs are the ideal tankmate for a new, young ATF.

Im not entirely sure if you meant that he's Ina cycling tank it he's going into a cycling tank, but if he is currently in a tank that is not cycled, that IS your problem and as much as I hate to say it, you're in grave danger if killing him.

I think your problem is the tank is way to small, ATF swim constantly and the lack of space will be stressing him badly IMO, I also agree with the tank mate theory but I'm not sure it would help as it might make the situation worse in a small tank.

I think the best thing you can do is try to find something larger for the time being, even a kids paddling pool with a cover over it will do, if that's not possible then get the 300g ASAP and do a fish in cycle.

I have to say that i am far from being new to the hobby but i am new to the site and new to hydrocynus sp. The tank that he is in is cycled and has been for about 2 years. What i meant was that the eheim filters that are going to be on the 300 gallon tank are getting cycled on my piranha tank just to establishe the bacteria colony so they will be ready when the tank comes and i don't have to wait for the process to take place later on. I hope i can get my hands on some Tinfoil barbs tomorrow. If not is there anything else i could throw in with him?

Before i got him he was in quarantine in Germany for longer then i have him now and in a much smaller aquarium with lesser flow.

I will get him some tank mates tomorrow so that he has some company and hopefully that will do the trick. I will update you guys tomorrow. Thank you all for all the advice!

I am relieved to see that he is in a cycled tank. I wasn't sure if he was. :)

Try adding MORE flow to your 35, this will give him a treadmill of sorts to swim into. I've successfully grown out numerous young ATF from all five species in a twenty long so you should have enough space.

With a trio of tinfoil barbs he should be ok-- barring any unknown factors that is. If you can't get TFBs, smaller silver dollars work fine as well.

Just got him 4 silver dollars and right now no effect. The dollars are staying together and the goliath is still on his own. I hope that will change or at least that their presence will keep him calm. However if he makes it i can not imagine cleaning his tank. Any advice on how you guys do it?

Update:

I don't want to speak to soon but he started to follow the dollars and when he isn't he just goes in front of the filter flow and swims. So thank you everyone for all the help!
