Hello I bought a AGTF and i put about ten small feeders in there with him i also bought some canivore pellets.

i havent seen him feed yet, hes had small bursts of speed after them but never gets one. this morning i woke up to one of the larger feeders dead with a few puncture marks on it but not any chunks have been taken off the feeder. i put in two pellets when i get home from work but he hasnt gone for that at all (barely goes near surface, mostly mid with a little bit of being on the bottom every now and then)

its been two days and he still has the same amount of strength as when i first got him but am concerned. i know it should be as simple as counting down the feeders but i had a brain fart and did not count them as i caught them.

How long have you had him? What size tank? Most fish will not eat for a week or so when you first get them. I don't even try to feed my new fish for a while after getting them.

thanks for the help, hes currently in a 55G while i get all the info i need to make my 300G perfect for him and two other preds.

when i left for work yesterday there were 12 feeders in there when i got back the was 8 and this morning there was five so i took out 4 and will feed him on schedule now.

we got to see him strike a feeder it was pretty gnarly but even after eating a feeder that in length waould go from tip of mouth to top fin and he did not bulge in the stomach, they must be mucle-ripped fish. (e.g guy with six pack eats and looks normal vs. guy with beer gut that just ate will look pregnant.)

My Bowfin is the same way, it had a hard time catching feeders so they were around for a few days. Try things like earthworms and -my most recent find- live sand shrimp.

My Bow will not eat anything but live foods for now, as I suspect most true carnivores do, so your going to have some time invested to get your fish to take pellets, they just don't see that as a food source.

You may have infected your atf by using non treated feeders. So now it has nematodes and/or intestinal flagellates.

I wouldn't jump straight to that, considering he has still eaten.

In more than 4 months since I got my GATF, I've only seen him eat once. All other meals have happened either when I'm at work, or at night. He gets through 100 feeders in 2 weeks. So I'm not sure you keeping just 1 fish at a time is enough. Juvenile fishes are not the best at hunting. They'd miss quite a bit. So I'd think having more in there to increase his "hit count" is a good strategy.

Guess it also depends what your feeders are exactly. Mine are Black Neon Tetras, so he goes through a few a night.

#1.......don't feed ur atf feeders! They bring in nasty paracites

Guppies or minnows ,pinch tails if needed but probably not needed for an elite predator .switch to shrimp or krill when eating regularly .

yes hes eating now and quite a bit, he went threw 75 in a week and three days. and yes i increased "his hit count" i usually put lucky seven in before work.

so switch to non minnows? shrimp like ghost shrimp because i havent seen anything larger than that at my LFS.

I just found a 30 gallon tank with a old fluval 404 filter and the guy wants $10 so now i can start a food supply breeding tank.
