Goliath update!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
How big is it? Still too small for rays? Figured it'd at least be big enough to hang with them gorgeous Marbles of yours.......

Odd there looks like there's hardly any red at all in the tail???

Is he eating better for you now?
Yes., he knows me now...lol he is ready to eat when food gets in the tank!

DB, it is very hard to measure him... id guess he is 12"+ He could make it with the marbles but they are chained off my main tank in a 3' x 18" tank still LOL i dont think he would be a fan of that tank... i have been tempted to move the marbles in to his tank with him that he is in 5' x 2', but it is currently in the garage and i dont wanna stuff the marbles in the garage :) may possibly move that tank someday inside.
He has a slight red color in the tail but not much. Seems he has a different head and body structure as well from others ive seen.

He does look to have an odd face for a Goliath - looks like the head of a Tanzy in my opinion....

Enough to wonder if there isn't multiple locational variants of them. There's been so many odd or different ones posted - there sure seems like there's some different looking versions.

Hope he does well with rays.... Would make me nervous raising them seperately.....

I think it is GATF. It might banged head on a wall. I also believe GATFs do have variations. Perhaps from different catching location?
One has thicker body, bigger head with U shape, pointy tail like VATF like the one in TC's pic.
Second is broader body with V shape tail. It isn't so skittish. The one in this pic is bigger and isn't mine but you got the idea what it looks like: hxxp://www.aquariumbible.com/i/giant-tigerfish.jpg

So... what do you think?

Can't say completely conclusively but there should be multiple sp of both gatf and vatf. From my experience there is indeed a sumo body variation of both vatf/gatf. I've grown out about 6 gatf and the only one I have currently grew exceptionally fast and is not as skittish as the other ones. The one I have seems to look a little diff from the ones posted @luval keepinfish keepinfish none the less, beautiful gatf there. IMO I think it's fine to keep with stingrays at the size already. Once they get larger, they might nip at the stingrays if they float around or climb walls a lot. At least mine does, will have to see as i move them into a larger setup. I have a friend with 65-70cm that is quite aggressive so I'm not sure if they just get more and more impatient as they mature, which may be the case as we've seen posted here on MFK.

WOW!
that thing is a beast! How big is he getting now?
I am not worried mine will hurt the rays, im afraid a 16-17" female ray may eat the gatf. I have a pair of p14 and they are nuts to say the least! I may give him a bit more time, but it is coming soon!

what do you have this big guy eating?

this is him when i got him.... i think he was around 6.5" i cannot remember. 1 year and 4 months later he is a little over a foot i think....https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/new-goliath-pick-up.655476/

This bad boy is about 22-23"... pretty large already. Greedily feeding on defrosted market prawn and dojo loaches. Pretty happy I got him off live feeders. The BD tankmate is about 14" diameter now and is somewhat scared of the gatf.. (don't blame him at all...) best of luck to your gatf :)
