I have an fx6 on a 120 (4ftx4ftx2ft); and it won't stop knocking. Fluval said to replace the seals which i did - still knocks (kicking out air i guess); anyway the thing is 4 years old and i rather spend my time on something else - so is there a good alternative? The tank currently has 5 krobia and 14 angels with a few 5 inch pleco (4?). I'll be giving away 1/2 the angels soon - so i just want something that will do the job quietly. A bit of current is fine.

The Eheim cannisters work well too
I personally like the fx series better though

I have an old classic i hate (2227) for many reasons from crappy plastic that falls apart (the joiner between the spray bar and return thingy) to the miserable flow. Not to mention eheim has left usa but having said that is there a particular model?

What about ossae or penplex or well anything else or do they all suck ? Hum - is there a decent on the back filter that is large enough for a tank this size and have large enough gap that it will actually fit on a 120 frame.

As suggested, Fluval Aquaclear 110’s likely fit the frame and are excellent filters. But are of course not canisters.
With the measurements you provided, 48x48x24”, the tank is not 120gal. More like 160gal. Good luck!

Hate to say it but fluval FX's are the way to go for canister filters. I have tried alot and haven't found anything that compares. I really like the Tidal HOB filters I have.

The Aquaclear 110 is the gold standard as far as hobs filters goes, in my opinion. Ease of maintenance, availability of replacement parts. There are members here with 10 years plus of use.
I have ran multiple 6ft 125gal tanks with tripping 110's along the back. Best decision ever. The ease of maintenance makes you do it when needed instead of procrastinating it off as far as possible.

I've used smaller fluvals - i think a 60 and a 40; they are ok i guess. Tidal is a newer design that hasn't been on the market 10 years. Marineland has some sort of hob that people rave about but i forget the model (they have several). I forget why some people prefer the tidal over the fluval - no clue if it is better, worse or the same.

Really pissed off at this fx6 knocking constantly. It does that i presume to remove air but i can find no means to make it stop. My eheim 2227 has never done that; its only problem is a pia to clean and relatively weak flow as well as the plastics that going into the aquarium going bad after several years and not being able to find the right replacements (that funky green connector between the input and spray bar).

Had it wrong - it is 48x24x24 ;)

I have been very happy with the Tidal. As mentioned they haven't been around to advise on longevity. They to use sicce pumps which are rock solid.
