I'm looking for a carpet plant that will grow fast in my sand substrate and can tolerate high and low light since I have a metal halide in the middle of my tank and the two sides are shaded. What do you guys recommend?

a good carpet plant that grows fast when given the right amount of light and Co2 would be glosso or HC..

however, for ur situation i would try dwarf hair grass.

if speed is what u want.. then i highly recommend Co2...
if ur sand is inert i would add root tabs to it.

Currently I'm using fish poop and rotten food as the fertilizer and it seems to be working very well for all my plants

is there any carpet plant to use on inert sand without the use of special lights (low light levels)? would cichlids eat it? if so is it good for them?

You could try dwarf sag. Its not really a carpet plant but ti does send out lots of runners and stays pretty low. Another option would be HM (not really low light, but easier than some ofthe other carpeting plants) or dwarf clover (marsilea minuta). Regardless, ground cover and low light don't really go together that well.

I might try dwarf sag for my tank then, it looks quite nice, i just hope it doesn't grow to 1 ft

After research dwarf sag I read that it grows up to 12" with high light and nutrients. I have high light but don't use CO2 or fertilizer, just jardini poop and rotten fish food. So do you think the sag will still grow up to 12"?

What are you considering high light? I have 2wpg and no co2 or ferts in several of my tanks and it stays under 4" tall.
