Ok, So I've finally decided on a texas (carpinte) on his own with no other large males for my 272 litre (71 us gallons) 'L' shaped tank!! However i was wondering if would be feasible to add a pair of something smaller that could provide some extra intrest and also some fry for the texas to eat? It would have to be something that didn't fet too agro for the texas once it had fry!! Any ideas for the potential pair!?! Also is there any extra/ alternative fish i could add ( something like livebearers that could add some live food would be nice!!).
Thanks for your help in making up my ever changing mind!!!!

Get cons for that. They are tough. Make sure they are at least 2 times smaller than the Texas....They will kick it's ass if they mate. If the male con is big, it could try to kick the texas's ass anyways. So make sure the Tex is big enough to be boss the boss.

get the smallest carpinte you can and some big swordtails (preferably montezumae ;) ). this way hopefully as he gets bigger the large swords won't be considered a food source but the much smaller fry will be. :D

my carpintis is super aggressive, tries to kill anything i put with it except my 8.5" JD, if yours turns out to be anything like mine, it'll have to be a loner

i have a 8" texas thats very aggresive but whn ever the cons mate the male cone kick the texas ass.
i think what jason told can work for somtime

a lot of times even the most aggressive large cichlid species will ignore non-cichlid fishes that aren't territorial such as shoaling and schooling fish. now of course there are exceptions but I've found this to be true in many cases. also there's going to be a much better shot at the large aggressive cichlid ignoring a school of something if he grows up with them. IMO this would have a much better chance at success than keeping another cichlid in there with him unless you want to go with a pair. :)

How about some big sailfin mollies.

jason i wish it worked for me, i tride that many times with Gambusia affinis and capoeta damascina but they never had time to mate they were all eaten in 2 days even when i put in the tank 100 of them :(
