Good Dithers for a 90 Gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Filament barbs are great, they'll get up to about six inches I think ,and they're a little scrappy.....usually around 3-5 bucks ea. they'll take a little time but the males get some good color

I agree. Very underrated fish. Another option in the same category is Dawkinsia tambraparniei, or the Trade Arulius barb. They don't get as large as the Dawkinsia filamentosa, but are about $4-5 each and are very fast and colorful, too.

Rosy barbs, I got mine for about $1.50 each after conversion and they are awesome. A large group could work well, they look amazing as they grow as well

I agree Filament barbs would be a good option or tiger barbs. If you want upper water you might go giant danio

The main thing is they just need to be too big to be munched haha. I've seen the frontosa gobble 2" guppies with no problem. Same with salvini.

Barbs would be cool. Same with the danios, do giants breed easy?

i love my spanner barbs, they roll with my aggressive cichlids in the 300...
they get 18cm+ tho but it takes an age.
other options,
Buenos aires tetra
long finned tetra
mascara barb
rainbows

My zebras are prolific but I haven't had giants breed on me.

True it may be difficult to find them much bigger than 2" in the shops but I found their growth rate fairly rapid up to the 3-3.5" neighborhood. Mine were mbuna dithers tho and they spawned constantly but the eggs never stood a chance

I don't mind if the fry are snacks. Good nutrition there! LOL.

Welp, I picked out 3 giant danios and a baby tinfoil barb! Got them at petco. They seem to get along well. They are in the 29 for quarantine.

Hope Mr. barb won't get too huge too quick. If he grows big within a year, that's fine by me, the 90 is 18" wide so I'm not super worried. Hopefully we will be moved out to a condo or house at that point. I'm for sure upgrading the 90 within that timeframe (it's 20 years old and needs a reseal/new front panel soon anyway), most likely to a 225+.

:p
