I have two AC110s on my 150 with sand substrate. On both filters, I have extensions on the intakes. I've never had trouble with sand getting suspended in the water. I can see that if sand got into the impeller of ANY filter, it could cause problems. But I don't think this is an isolated issue with ACs.

ok awesome thanks a lot!

I want to get a new filter for my 55g and i already have a few filters in mind but i just want a good filter that i can trust to get the job done.

I was thinking about getting a fluval c4, an aquaclear 70 or 110, aqueon quietflow 55, or a whisper ex70.

Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks.

55g basic setup, Aqua Clear 101.....................Or..............Two Aqua CLear 70's....................Running a canister on a small tank, like a 55g, to me is a wa$te...........Your basic HOB Aqua Clears will do the job..........As for anything over 100g, that's when I think it is time to invest in some seriuos filtration, or better, building you own WET"DRY filter.............

on tanks with the stock you have, the fish may be a little messy, and 2 filters to back each other up is always a great idea. maybe you could do an eheim 2213 or 2215 with an AC 70? that would be perfect.

I use the super naturals sand which is very fine on my 55, and my AC 110 does get a little bit sucked into it every once in a while. I just turn it off when cleaning the sand or rearranging the tank, and i take apart and clean out the sand every 2 weeks or so. No issues as far as noise goes though. Great filters.

PS : I hope you have a larger tank soon. That stock isn't gonna be happy in a 55g once they are all grown up
