Good fish for a 2 footer?

It's not cichlids, so this post might be moot; but for a 2 foot tank, small shell dwellers or minnows would look phenomenal.
It's not really enjoyable to see fish unsuited for small tanks, but the difference when you see fish that do suit it; is amazing.
If you like planted set-ups, I've found them to be very rewarding recently, complemented with fish like mountain minnows
