Good fish for cycling tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For big tanks I just throw in a fillet of tilapia and let it rot. By the time it's gone there will be more than enough BB.

Why don't you fishless cycle your tank? No fish are harmed in the process, and you can build up massive amounts of beneficial bacteria, enough to more than handle the bioload of the fish you are going to add to the tank.

Actually there are certain types of bacteria ONLY other fish can release...I think it comes from fish poo or something. I remember reading this somewhere.

However, Goldfish are pretty quick and efficient, or mollys, guppies. Id personally go with goldfish and molly's :D. They are very good at building up the cycle.

I actually heard from a guy at this shop once, molly's are very delicate fish and if they die, something is really wrong with your tank lol

I'm using the NutraFin Cycle bottle. I wanted to use silver dollars in concert with the cycle bacteria to cycle my tank. So far, I haven't put any fish in the tank to help it cycle, but this is the third day where I dosed the tank with the cycle bacteria.

I've heard that stuff doesn't work. Best go with Seachem Stability. And if you're putting beneficial bacteria in your tank while there isn't any ammonia in there, the bacteria is dying. Get some ammonia in there.

I havn't heard if Nutrifin is good or bad, but yeah, if the product is what I think it is (stress-zyme/stability/ect) you should put some fish live or dead in the tank to give the bacteria you are adding something to eat actually, just follow the instructions on the back of the bottle to the "T".

none of this.....

Stability works really well. Add it with some stock and enjoy your tank. Couldnt be more simple...
