Some of you know me as that jack wad who bought tons of tanks from people when the economy was in decline with the notion He'd get into breeding. :screwy:

Well that is me alright. I still work full time at a real job and the project of setting everything up and my current location has been going very slowly but its still going and we have 300 fry of 5 different species at the moment.

Any way have had a couple of people over to pick up stuff from our craigslist postings recently. I love helping other enthusiasts. We get allot of amateur keepers actually its goofy but fun.

My observation is how much better business you can establish by building a rapport with your customers and how few pet shops do it. Granted there are exceptions but its funny to me how many poor business' there are out there right now.

We get people who think an Oscar and demasoni can live together for life. I just really enjoy educating the customer and guiding them. Offering trade ins on certain fish and my favorite one goofily enough is saying, nope your tanks isn't large enough. Preventing that disaster we've all been party to at one point in time of getting to many or to large of fish for our tanks. To sell one less fish is to earn one more dedicated customer, not to mention the good word of mouth. It seems we fish keepers are a small community and it behooves us in the business of selling to remember that. Maybe I''m goofy because I don't depend on it as my sole source of income but I enjoy it and its what makes me want to do more of this all the time.

Wondering if there are any other breeders people on here who have been party to such an exchange. How did it change your expectations for your fish and your consumer experience???

My boss taught me from the very beginning its best to give the right info and build a relationship with costumers. Its better to make a little bit the first time and earn a repeat costumer than have them buy alot of stuff they dont need and never come back

well done, not many people can make a profit from breeding their fish. Care to share some pics of your tanks ?

No profit yet but its we only just started breeding again in the last month from the move. For more detail you can see the link for the original setup then how its doing now after the move, here is a readers digest of what is going on will be posted tonight after cleaning. I'll take some photos with my poor camera. I have some very poor cellphone vids on the other thread but I want to do decent photos to do it justice. here is a shot of our stud benga who has yielded many great spawns so far.

skip the first 15 seconds.

Lol, your room sounds like a waterfall or ocean...love it though, looks like a mini fish store :)

Thanks, I just really wish I had had someone at a pet store stop and explain how to keep fish well. To this day the overstock method is all I've ever had promoted to me at a pet store. Pecking order is never discussed nor are other popular and more long term viable solutions like dither fish. One store in kalamazoo where I went to college would ask what all your fish were and then make recommendations but they still never promoted the hobby the way I would have appreciated. I guess the thing you get at best is some statistics never ideas ya know. Well that fish gets this big so get a big tank... ok that is helpful sorta.

What I enjoy is look for this here tank size tank onsale at this shop ever couple months. Or even recommending competitors. I was talking to people about trade shows and the local cichlid association because ya know its not like we won't be having a presence in the spring and heck love of fish = love of fish don't like treating people like dunces. Trying to act like the trade show doesn't exist doesn't help my business at all. Maybe I have a bad mind for business but I'm of the notion that hey some guys will do what my mom's neighbor does and ask, ok can you get that for me, and the other guys will just appreciate the honesty and you build rapport.

There is a suprising number of consumers who aren't into the tradeshow or auction house scene and would rather walk into a basement and see the fish in tanks and the studs for the lot of fry they are picking from. I'm just happy to know that they pay in cash ;)

Sorry for the delay if you follow this link you can see the update per your request. But don't let this convo die its about good experiences at retail anyone might have had. I started out on this venture for my love of aquariums not considering how selling fish can be a services business purely on the basis of keeping the best interest of your animals and customer in mind. Services is a very rewarding type of work for me. Any way link:

I do it is fun, the work part keeps growing as fish spawning means between me and my friend that someone has to do something with moving fish all the time. The burden of the hobby grows allot but I really hope it manifests into something of a lucrative business.

 Man that looks awesome your own personal breeding facility i wish i could convince my parents to let me make the same " investment ". Where you moving to ? if its any where far thats alot of work to do just to have to pick it all up and transfer.

Only thing left to do is swap out some of those africans for some SA/CA cichlids :grinno:
