Good Idea or Bad Idea

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, I took all of this into consideration and after looking at what was available I decided against adding another cichlid. 4 Red Hooks are now in there with him and he isn't sure what to make of them. He chased them a lot when I first put them in the tank but they are too fast for him. These are much bigger than the silver dollars i tried the other day and ended up taking back to the other pet store. We'll see what happens.

a flower horn will kill all of the fish if it wanted to, but ive see most of them keeped with flowerhorns

This has been confirmed. On Sunday he corralled all of the silver dollars in a corner behind the tallest plant in the tank and basically stayed there all day. This morning when i went to feed him before work I found one completely descaled SD. :(
Looks like whoever survives until I make it home from work will be going back to the LFS.
I guess it all goes back to having fish socialized from a young age (I've never had this problem with cichlids and SDs, but then again they always grew out together and the FH was about 6" long when I got him).

Well, time for the bad news. Only one survivor... Now back at the LFS. Odd thing, he was almost untouched while the other three were destoryed. I guess he would pick one apart and then move on to the next one. Sad day... :irked:

In a 150 gal i might take the chance aswell but only i wouldnt introduce a jag because out of the options you mentioned, a jag is the only one that could end up killing the FH. I would only try to keep some degree of advantage for the flower horn if given the case they dont get along well, I wouldnt like to end up with my FH killed when everything was OK and i had the ocurrence of introducing other fish.

Cheers.

The only thing you should keep with a male FH is a female KKP, BP or a famale FH if they get along. My friend put a 7 inch male FH in his 150 with two 20inch arowana's. Both arowana's ended up dead. The FH is either gonna kill or get killed, that or it will get really beat up. If yo do decide to put another male in there, I'd suggest using a divider with really strong holders. I made the mistake of thinking that the glass divider would stay. Came home with two beat up FHs, luckily both recovered :duh:

Yeah, i think I'm just going to let him have the run of the tank. The Raphaels and Pleco seem fine, but I'll keep an eye on them too. I'm just going to do a lot of water changes and try to grow him out as fast as possible. Once he reaches 12" he will be more proportionate to the tank. :D
