Im making a sump filter for my 450 gallon and the sump will be 180 gallons. Im situating a 20 gallon trash bin inside the 180 gallon sump Wich will sit on the far right side of the sump against the side panel to act as the media holder. So this whole "trash can filter" is going to sit inside the 180 gal "sump" as the filtration. I have cut the bottom out of another trash can to sit inside the top 5 inches of the Main trash bin this will act as the trickle tray I have drilled many holes so that water can drip down into the media , the trickle tray sits inside the main trash can and water overflows from the main tank through the top of the trash bin into the tray which will hold blue and white filter pads ((and maybe seachem purigen or something not sure yet)). From there water trickels down from the trickle tray down into the main trash bin which holds the media, I am going to use lava rocks to fill the trash can this will be my media. Half will be above water the other half will be below. I've heard it's basically the same as seachem matrix. What do you guys think? Good idea? Or no? Any tips or experiences will be appreciated.

I'm basing my filtration similiar to this just instead of doing it with the rubber maid I will use a 180 gallon tank. And due to height of the stand I will be using a slightly shorter brute trash bin

A 180 is long. I don't understand what the rest of the sump is for. You still have another 5-6 ft to go.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing but it's the only tank I have available with a wide enough footprint to fit the trash bin. I was going to just use the extra room to seperate some growout fish. And add in some hydroponic baskets or pond plant baskets with pothos and use some of my old lights from old tanks for the sump to help grow the pothos

180 is fine. I don't follow why the trashcan, can in a can...huh? Just buy 4 filter socks, rig some way to hang em and support the pipe from your drains.

You have an instagram? Look at my profile. I'm that fish guy with an orange midas as my profile picture. There is a video of what I have done with the trash can thing. And a desc.

That vid on instagram makes sense, plus u can always house fish in the remainder of the sump. Nice foot print, good luck with your new set up bro.

Thanks man... once I'm done sanding buffing the tank all that needs to be done is measure and hook up plumbing and figure out how to heat this beast lol.
