I have a pair of 10" silver arowana in my 180 gallon currently and have a line to acquire a 20" alligator gar. Is the size difference too much to handle for the silvers? I do not want to jeopardize their health, and would be more then willing to pass on this gar if the masses tell me to do so.

Mind you, I am looking to upgrade sooner than later and would be moving to a 300 in the near future, but I am not certain that tank size will make as much of a difference as they are only half the size of the gar currently. The upgrade in tank size is more for the aro's to be comfortable, not necessarily to add companions.

What are your long term plans for the fish? Assuming you get it, a 300G is probably the bare minimum for a Silver aro, but is way too small for a full grown gator gar, which can grow to 6' or 7'. I would pass.

Edit: We posted at the same time. I've always thought Aros look good with a group of Geos.

well the plans for the basement will be a 300-400 gallon tank. Ideally the 400, but I want to make sure it fits properly. 300 I know I can handle no issues, 400 is just that much larger and takes that much more convincing of the wife. I also plan on moving down to 1 aro when they get larger, I want to have more of a community tank as I go along and not just 2 silver aros.

I started off last july with a 75 gallon tank with a handful of cichlids, and by November I moved to a 180 gallon Male cichlid show tank, and now I already want a 300-400 gallon tank. The wife thinks I am absolutely nuts for doing this. But c'est la vie, she will never understand the insanity in my head. lol

If these fish have size I'd say Oscars, peacock bass, jaguar. Have all the above with my "16 silver and have no issues
