So iwas in petsmart the other day and overheard a customer ask if they could buy a simple goldfish the employee asked what is was to be put into... the customer replied a 2.5 gallon tank, the employee told the customer that the tank was to small for a goldfish since they can become 12" long. I was so supprised that she cared enough about even the goldfish to tell them not to buy it the customer was mad and walked out but hey she was telling the truth
I have always enforced that rule to my employees, if they dont meet the requirements recommend a different fish, or an upgrade. if that doesnt work deny deny deny!!! It does piss people off, and we even had corporate come in and say that our store is getting to me complaints filed against it, but i said it says right here in the handbook that if they dont have the right requirements deny the sale! Well they said they are just fish, and then i said i was walking and so did about 3 other long-term employees, and they were forced to stop giving us grief about it. I loved refusing sales just to see what people say, and more often then not people get pissed and cuss at you and say " well i'm going to PetCo." I would say and let them go, but occasionally you would get a person willing to upgrade and that made my job that much better. I also told corporate that it is like selling a cat and putting it in a 10g tank!!!!
ya, they can also turn you down if they think you are going to mistreat a fish or other animal. i was in petsmart a few weeks back, getting some feeder comets for my res, and talking to the girl working there. she was saying how a guy came in, and was asking if the big koi were edible... turned him down flat.
so i would think that turning down someone for an improper setup would fall under the same category, it is considered mistreatment...
I always find it funny that people get upset that your telling them they can not buy a fish because they DONT meet the requirments. No one would buy a Great Dane and expect it to be kept in the smallest doggy carrier for life. But want to keep large fish in the smallest tanks they can find!
im more amazed here that petco and petsmart have inteligent employees cause i never met one in either place. i had to scoop my own fish there once cause the guy couldnt figure out what he was doing
I went to pet**/***** on thursday and I was gettin some rosies for some thinbars I just got. They were out, so I asked her whats the cheapest fish you got, thinking I'd just get some danios or whatever was on sale. She was going to refuse to sell them to me because she knew I was gonna use them as feeders. She did however let me purchase 2 dozen ghost shrimp.
I think Petsmart is baby stepping in the right direction. I've noticed some changes in their stock and employees over the past few months. I usually only go there for supplies, but I still snoop around the tanks. I was almost floored when I was approached and questioned about my set-ups. I ended up talking to the guy for a while after that. He told me that they shouldn't be selling pacus, he turns people down a lot, etc. It was a pleasent suprise, but I still don't think I'll be buying fish from them any time soon.

It all depends on the Region, and the Management. Often times Managers will know nothing about fish and it is their least priority. You CAN find quality employees in some stores, but they are far and few between.. Most of the time it only takes 1 bad experience to deem the entire store and staff unexceptable by an advanced hobbyist standards. They ARE taking steps in the right direction..
