Did not take any. I am going to pick it up tomorrow and will post pics then. Then maybe someone can ID it for me and offer their support after it eats my other fish

They most common species is a Hydrolycus scomberoides or scomb. They have a bad rap and most say that they die very easily. I have had a few and mine did die but it was a beginner mistake in a uncycled tank that did them in. The other less popular species is hydrolycus tatuaia or red tail payara. The are a good species to own and do not have any of the down falls that the scombs are said to have. I own this species now and for the last year. They do better in schools of 3 or more. This species is easy to tell apart cause it has a redish brown tint to it along the back and fins. There is also a species named armatus that shows up every so often and they sell for 2-500 usually at your 6-7'' size. They grow really fast about 1/4'' a month or more and need a very large tank like 300g plus. The first 2 do well with tank mates most of the time as long as they are the same size. The armatus on the other hand usually does not do well with most tank mates. There are 2 more species that are pretty rare. All of the payara eat live foods like feeder minnows and are hard to train to eat dead foods. --------------------------------------------------------------------What is the name of the shop you found him at and did they have any more? here is a pic of my redtail at about 7''
fairly certain its a scombs. . . i will post pics later. tank is not terribly mature but is cycled so we will just see. they had 2 but one had a cloudy eye. i dont want that one.
if it is a scomb i have been reading that they just die for no reason at about 7-10 in. well hes already 5 or 6. that is going to be silly if he just up and dies in a couple months for 50 bucks. also have a 4-5 in hujeta i might get.
just picked up the hujeta for a diff tank about 5 in for 15 bucks. held off on the other for now.

IMO I would have to try it out.---------actually i did I went and got 2 more today and was not sure which they were scomb or tat. until I got them home under some good lights. And I am 99.9% sure mine are TAT's. I also got mine in indiana and i would bet that all the fish shops in the area get there supply from the same person so that one of yours might actually be a TAT.
if its still there and healthy next week i may try it out. dont want him to eat my 2-3" clown loaches and my 4"pbass
