Good question about EBJD and Platinum Jack Dempseys

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does any one know what will happen if you bred a EBJD with a Platinum Jack Dempsey? I have a female EBJD and a male Platinum jack Dempsey and was wondering what the fry what be if they was to bred with each other, Would the fry be all Platinum's, would there be some EBJD's, Would they just have the blue jean's or what? Does any one know about this or has any one ever done it? Please let me know I would love to hear your input!!! And thank you in advance.....

Jamey - the breeding chart shows the expected outcome when breeding JD's with Electric Blue and Gold genetics. The assumption is that these two color forms breed from genes that are independent from one another and that they can both be inherited independently. The genetics still need to be tested out. If we take what has been proved over and over again with EBJD's, you would expect an EBJD x platinum cross would not produce viable young. Not sure if anyone has proven this, but this is what I would assume until it is proven differently but it is just an assumption.

Also, we are seeing some things popping up on aquabid regarding an electric pink JD. Supposedly these are bred from the same genes - original cross was from a Gold X EB which yielded something a little different than what everyone else has seen in making this cross. A friend who corresponded with the breeder shared this information and some information on subsequent generations from the original cross. The breeder is claiming that in sunlight, you can see two groups of light colored fish - some gold and some pink suggesting there may be more than one color form of the Gold JD that can be inherited. The breeder is also seeing another blue form that is more of a solid blue rather than the mottled blue we see in EBJD's when young. So the breeder is saying he has new color forms - Standard/wild type, EBJD, Gold, EB Gold (what we have been calling Platinum), EB Pink, and a solid blue form he is calling Platinum. The reason I bring this up is that it muddies the water in my opinion as to what is going on here. Based on the descriptions of some of the fish produced by this breeder, it does not follow what others have seen when breeding these fish. Is there some additional color genes this breeder has found? The breeder claims these are "pure" JD's (not purposely hybridizing with other species).

So when approaching these crosses - don't assume it is all figured out and there are people that know exactly what to expect. This is all relatively new and it looks like there is much to learn in this space.

Thanks!

Wow... That is awesome information Patrick and thank you very much for sharing this with me... This really makes me want to say the heck with it I am going to try it, What is the worst thing that can happen the fry don't survive? Just because it don't work for some don't mean it will never work for anyone.... Maybe I will be the first to get it to work and I will create a new JD..LOL I don't have a big enough regular JD to breed with her but I do have a big enough Platinum to breed with her and she just spawned with another EBJD and the fry is about 2 weeks old now with about 100 wigglers in the tank.. I know they will not survive but they have so far... Thank you very much for your help Sir.. You have gave me new hope!!!!

Good Stuff!!!! As always Auratum.....

Im with INTHECOWBOYSWETRUST...
I also will try the combos that are assumed not to produce viable fry. I mean hey you never know... Until you try all you can think of and who knows genetic maybe on someone's side...

It is always worth a try... I still have some fry left that are EBJD x EBJD and they are about 2 weeks old now, I don't expect them to survive but you never know until you try it... Best of luck to you with all your breeding idea's....

I think my EBJD and PGJD paired off. I will be posting details as they occur.
Please keep us informed.. I would love to see it, Mine just seem to fight with each other right now I'm hoping they will settle in and pair off soon but no luck yet!!! I have 2 male Platinum's and 1 female EBJD in a 55 together right now waiting for them to fall in love.. lol..
