Good solo fish for a 75?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
But don't all fish that are as big as around 12" need frequent water changes?

Yes you are right Leo. However all fish need water changes I don't care if you have an fx 5 on a 40 breeder you still need water changes. It is essential for the health of the fish big or small even in my 5 gallon betta tanks I do 25% weekly even though they are beefed on filtration no matter what size the fish is you must always do water changes

yes they do, depending on tank size. for a 75 with that water change schedule be better off getting a school of blue gourami, cool fish, can put 5 or 7 in, stay with odd numbers. and shuold be fine.

+1 on this. common perception more filtration less water changes, this is not true, ammonia to nitrite, nitrite to nitrate, no mater how many filters you have the math will not change for the tank, x amount if ammonia well = x amount of nitrate. larger fish put out allot more ammonia through respiration that smaller fish, an example, I have a 12" oscar in the 180. I have 35 small fish in the 75, all those 35 fish do not add up to the mass of the Oscar.

I realize all this. I am wanting to cut back the amount of water I need to change, not the frequency. I can do weekly water changes I just can't do as large of a water change. Look, I am just simply looking for suggestions on a single fish, not a lesson in the nitrogen cycle. I understand what you're saying. I'm not new to this hobby. I know how to properly take care of my fish. I understand that filtration doesn't remove the need for frequent water changes. All these thing I understand. I was just looking for opinions on native fish possibilities. Thanks for the suggestions, I think I can figure it out from here.

I know this is not a large fish, but what about a dollar sunfish? they get around 4in and can be by themselves. I know you were most likely in the hobby, Its just we were saying a
large fish =/= small water change since the fish will produce more waste. so if you still want a suggestion for a fish, try something small like the dollar sunfish I suggested. What kind of longear is it? I have a longear that is about 6in and he is one of the many types of central longear sunfish. I'm sorry if we were annoying you. Try giving us ideas of fish you like, then we can say what would work.

female jag, they in your face, do not hide and always up to something.

It just got a little frustrating. It just seems like any thread on any fish forum, if it goes on long enough will eventually turn into a big fish keeping 101 argument. I was just looking for suggestions on a single fish that won't outgrow the tank that will have a decent amount of personality. A few weeks ago I decided to drastically decrease the stock in my tank because it was becoming too time consuming to take care of. I had 6 longears and 4 creek chubs in the tank. I have since taken out all but one of the longears. I kept the largest one 5-6". He is a central longear collected from Southern IL. I've posted videos of him on here in the native media sub forum. At this point, I am considering keeping him and just adding a school of steelcolor shiners to act as dithers. If I decide to get rid of him I will probably go with a single green sunfish. He wouldn't outgrow the tank and if fed appropriately i can cut back my water changes to about 20-30% each week. That will keep the nitrates down to an appropriate level and maybe once a month or so, I'll do a larger 50-60% water change. I just don't have time to do massive water changes every week. I need to be flexible enough to where I can do smaller water changes some weeks. If I heavily stock the tank like it was I wouldn't really have much choice. If I got behind then I would have a huge algae problem or the fish would get stressed and possibly sick. That's what I'm trying to avoid.

folks that care about fish going to offer there reasons for this or that. If you had explained right off what water changes you are able to do could have saved some greef. again female Jag, male JD or some gourami work well with that water change schedule, sorry if complicating matters for you. :)
