good substitute for pleco?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've had a sailfin pleco in my brakish tank for at least nine months he seems happy and healthy my specific gravity is at 1.008 He's tripled in size since I got him and hope he will remain healthy

9 months is nothing comapared to the fact it can live into it's teens. Forcing a FW fish to live in BW is never a good idea. What BW fish are you keeping?

I have never keep fish in a tank just to have them there, if you want plec for algae control in high sal brackish water would go with a few scats and watch nitrate levels and light time (lower and watch band width) scats will graze all day I have to feed mine supplement algae cause they love algae (plus they are great fish) but if you just want a cool mix mother nature is the boss......

What is the species. name and investigate. I will bet he is not from high sal. water and his bone structure and color will be weak plus he will die before maturity if it is any plec I know if not let me know cause I would like to have a new type fish in my BW

I'm not sure of the species name and im sure its not a brackish fish .It sounds like I'll be moving him soon

Good idea.

Even I moved my plecos after awhlile.

For a decent clean up crew, I have a fiddler crab and a small crew of red claw crabs, they love algae and also eat leftover food.

Depends on the tankmates--not with puffers!

my uncle has a 100 gallon brackish water tank thats has a common pleco in their thats been in the tank for over 6 years....or so.And nothing seems to be bad about it but it was really not active in freshwater then when he was in brackish....he was really active swimming around the whole tank with food in its mouth.

also he had about 7 Fiddler Crabs in the tank as for any algea things in the bloom off the bottom floors

Plecos do not go in brackish conditions period. They get what can be described as boils/blisters and it's quite horrible. The closest thing I think you'll find will be something like mollies as suggested or certain species of goby. But we all know, reduced lighting and nitrates are the best cure for algae. Also, yeah, the leaf fish should be in FW.
