I have a small two inch Oscar in a 55 gal. i was wondering what other fish i can put with him that wont require me to get a bigger tank
well the oscar itself will eventuaally need a bigger tank.. trust me they grow really fast...

If your insistent on a tank mate. Grab a Bushy Nose pleco. but start saving for that 100-150G your going to want when that O is full grown in a year.

55 will be too small for oscar. Need a tank with a minimum 18" wide foot print. Oscars grow really fast and will reach 12-14". Paired with a 55 gallon tank that is 12" wide, oscar will not be able to turn around.

i have had dozens of oscars over the last 15 years; most were sold, a few died, and in my experience with a larger tank if placed in a comunity early on they will do great with a host of fish, jaguar cichlids(much bigger tank) TSN, RTC, silver aro( aro must be about a foot long and its worked for me)again plecos, blood parrots (even thoughy alot of people hate them for good reasons, but a nice fish none the less)chocolate parrots are also great

one thing to realize is there may definitely be some agresson in the tank its all about what you are into.

they are also very dirty fish and require alot of water changes and large filtration system( i recommend 2-3 time as much as you think you need)hahaha
and i wouldnt plan on alot of decorations that arent anchored very well. When they get big they like to decorate the tank as the wish, one day i came to my shop and all the rocks were in a large pile on one end with the decor which the dug up.

any how if any of this info helps thats cool if you already knew this stuff then sorry bro( always here to help with my personal experience)

A 55 will be fine for awhile, but you'll need at least a 90+ in my opinion. You should be fine until it hits around 8" and after that you have to upgrade because they do grow very fast and they need plenty of turning room because they are very solid fish and cannot bend themselves to turn. 16" wide is about the absolute minimum for an Oscar.

Now as for tankmates, in the 55 I'd say hold off, oscars are monster eaters and when a lot of food goes in then a lot of…… comes out. Maybe a waist eating fish but you should really hold off until you have a larger tank. But oscars are pretty much compatable with anything that's its size or larger and is not extremely aggressive, I personally think oscars are big wimps with big mouths and big appetites lol
goodluck

x2 of what Goestonemoa said, all of it very, very true. I would like to add that feeding them on a regular schedule tends to reduce aggression. I'm not trying to speak for all cases, but with my experience this helps. The reason seems to be that they get into a routine and seem to be "chill" when they know its not feeding time. Also making sure that there is plenty of object in the tank that "break line of site" also seems to help in that they are not always able to eye other fish in the tank. Having more items in the tank also requires a larger tank to allow for adequate space for the fish, but with oscars your gonna need a fairly large tank anyway.
If you do start to see aggression try and rearrange the tank to make their line of site more interrupted and also SLOWLY lower the temperature to the lower end of their acceptable temp range. These are just tips that I have found that work for the fish I have kept. Remember that all fish are different so try different techniques and see what works for your specific scenario.

you will need a bigger tank but if u want to overcrowd it these are the fish which can live with oscars but dont keep more then two
1)green terrors
2)parrot cichlid
3)blue dolphin
4)sun catfish
5)clown knife
6)silver dollars but they have to be in groups of 5 so i wouldnt recommend these
7)plecos
you can keep one of these fish but then you will have to do partial water changes every week

As others posted you will need a bigger tank, not because we are dicks and want to bust your balls, its just because said oscar will need 75 gallon min. I would suggest getting at least 90 gallon tank and getting a severum as a tank mate.
