Good Tank Size for a SAL

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have 2 in a 125, they do fine. They are only in there until my other tank is complete but they dont seem to have a problem.
2-2.5 footers

Devder, SAL will be fine in there. Mine lives with anything, they are nowhere near as aggressive as the African species. Don't put them with really slow small bottom dwellers or crunchy inverts. Mine have lived with turtles, stingrays, polys, aros, cichlids, etc.

Wow glad to see this thread resurrected! I'm still planning on getting the standard 180g (6x2x2) cuz I will have tankmates! But that is good to know if I do get short on funds I can buy a smaller tank just for him. Right now my SAL is in 55g but he's only 14.5"

They are truly awesome fish, being able to keep tankmates (unlike my Africans) is a huge plus. Interesting observation, when kept in my 240 with larger fish like aros, the lung was barely active. I didn't see him eat for almost two years. Now in the 135 with smaller fish, he's all over the tank. I always assumed it had something to do with size, as my 24" incher was always active, but shallower tank combined with less intimidating tankmates seems to have been the issue.

You could keep it in a 75 if it is solo. Think of it like an eel, not like an arowana or comparably bulky monster.

Thanks AU, that is actually my old tank, I'll have to take pics of it with it's current decore and tankmates. That fish above the SAL is a Green aro, although there is a Kingsley's ctenopoma in there too (or was).

Thanks for the heads up.

Devder1, you can, but sometimes aggressive individuals do pop out. Other than that, they're about the only real viable option as far as comm Lungfish go (Unless your willing to shell out the bucks and legal matters needed for an Australian Lungfish).

That is very interesting! What were the other tankmates besides the aros? I'm planning to keep mine with geos (most likely redhead tapajos), uaru (maybe), delhezi bichir (maybe) and a bgk cuz of their peaceful nature. So we'll see how the combo works out!

Wow well where could I get a SAL? And also are bichirs bad tankmates for SALs?
