The way I found worked best and most inhumanely was by using a high volume-based alcohol. If you find some alcohol 40% vol (80% proof) or above, just plop the fish in and it will die instantly. I felt really bad afterwards, but in the end it is for the best.
This is not right at all...I collect fish for work, (both live and for the largest collection of preserved native fishes in the state, and apparently the country and world.)
We use the alcohol method to kill the fish that we collect, and they do not die instantly. This is not as human as slowly putting the fish to sleep by slowing it down with cool temperatures. Not only that, but you have to sit there and watch your fish freak out as it is doing whatever it is doing in alcohol.
