Goonch ID

Yours looks lica to me, as well. The pics aren't the best however. I reserve the right to change my mind on yours if/when better pics are presented.
Also, I’ve been keeping him around 68 degrees with heavy flow. Should I up the temp to around 75?

That fish looks lica to me, but I'm keeping my caveat.

How long have you had it at 68? He seems fine with that ?‍♂️

I’ve had him for alittle over 2 weeks now. I just leave the heater off and let it stay at room temp because I was thinking it was b.b. He is only active at night and he eats Mollies at the moment, I’m trying to go raw shrimp and tilapia but it ain’t working. I can put 5 or 6 mollies in there and they are all gone by the next morning.

He seems pretty content. There's a lot of debate over the ideal temps for these guys. If he's doing ok, leave him be, but watch for stress. Ime they tend to croak when the temps CHANGE, regardless of what you have them at.

I really want him to have tankmates. Could I possibly raise the temp a degree or so a week till I’m up to around 75-78? To me he’s awesome but to the family think he’s ugly and boring. I want peacock bass or other monster fish that look nice and actually move. They are all going in a 600gal within the year

lol thats the downfall of having plecos/catfish they are definitely breathtaking for us to look at for hours. To the nonfish folks its just a boring statue to them If they even can see it. My favorite pleco a L24 stays hidden in her huge cave showing off her tail at the end of the cave so its good enough to prove her existence. I’m planning on moving in the bigger loaches so it will be definitely more active on the bottom portion of the tank.

Enjoy your beautiful specimen. I think they are awesome looking.

Cheers

To me personally, there is little point in keeping fish if it can't be observed, monitored, enjoyed. Even if it shows up only at the feedings, that takes out 99% out of the motivation for me. YMMV. Glad we can and do differ.

Sorry to hear of the predicament. It's a tough one. I believe your only chance is to keep asking and heed Chicx and other goonch experts, e.g. headbanger_jib headbanger_jib comes to mind, we had other long-term keepers of multiple goonches but they don't come here anymore. IDK if you realize what you've got into but goonch appears a huge gamble and 1 in 10,000 sold (or who knows what freaky number) appears to be raised successfully to some size of subadulthood to adulthood.

One of the reasons I've never had the guts in 13 years to go goonch. Hopefully yet. ... Expensive learning curve and slim chance of success.

I second this, especially in regards to goonch surviving long term.

Ime, they are remarkably sensitive to change and will go into shock. Both of the goonch I've succeeded in raising out of the initial sensitive phase of introduction into a new tank from a retailer have not survived when I attempted to move from one house to another. I had Dottie, a rutilus, that lived in a tropical (~78*) tank for almost 3 years. She (randomly assigned pronoun lol) ate pellets, was stable and grew from about 6" to 12" at death when I moved homes and tried to transfer her. 3D the Defiler, a lica, lived with me for almost two years. Same tank conditions as Dottie. He (random again) grew from 6" to almost a foot in that time, and would eat or kill pellets and literally anything else made of organic material I put into the tank. He also died after I moved homes and tried to move him to the new house.

I see goonch as a remarkable risk that should only be introduced into well established systems that are immune from disturbance or disruption. I feel that a goonch tank should be treated with the same care and attentiveness to stability that one would provide to a saltwater reef. These simply aren't fish that can go into a bucket when you're moving.

I think part of the reason I got one is the gamble of keeping one alive. I have read chicx thread on goonch ID about 3 or 4 times and googled as much as I could before purchasing. So I guess I went into it knowing what this fish is about

Thank you for bringing that thread up. I actually very much need to update it thanks to the recently published revision to Bagarius that formalizes several of the "conferatur" names that we've been using in the hobby; for example, cf "Indochina" has been formalized into B. lica as expected, and cf "dwarf" has been formalized into B. vegrandis.
