My goonch has grown about 1/2-2/3" in the past month putting him just shy of 9". Just today I put 7 2-3" Jack Dempseys in as snacks over the next couple of days. My plan is to keep his tank stocked with small cichlids, whatever type are cheapest at the time, to keep his hunting skills honed. I mean if I'm keeping a monster fish it might as well act like it right? After feeding my alligator gar frozen food for 9 months it can barely even catch a goldfish. I'm also using this as a means to give my goonch a better diet. He was only eating thawed shrimp and tilapia. The Jacks love nibbling massivore pellets though, so now he can get some of those too. I'll post some pictures after work tomorrow.

I'm so jealous...would love a pic...frozen stuff seems to work best for my fish-shrimp, tilapia, shiners, minnows, etc and also the commercial dry food stuff. It's cheaper in price, will last you longer...But, I"m so jealous...
That's what works for my other fish too. I'm just trying to keep the goonch as "wild" as possible and always "topped off" so to speak.
+1 you could breed guppies, convicts, goldfish, mosquitofish, somethin that would be alot cheaper

These were the cheapest cichlids at the store. $2.40 a piece. Guppies are too small. Goldfish have high thiaminase.
