all the people i have talked to that have owned them. do u have any first hand exp with them?

whatever happens never buy a goonch unless you are going to upgrade or have a 1000G tank or more.

nope. and the reason i dont is that i have spoken to people who have and they have had to keep them alone in huge tanks-i dont want one bad enough to give it that size of tank to its self.
im not doubting you as such, but have these people raised one to sub adult or like most have they killed the fish premeturely?
i regularly speek to people in lf shops and there are loads on this site who claim to be big fish keepers but have never managed to keep the fish past 12-18in when they have potential in a tank for double this and more.
i have spoken to people who have had 6 or more rtc`s in a 3 year period and all died. many fish will live for months with inadequate food and poor conditions, i suspect these are your "slow growers".
at the other end of the scale one of the staff at lfs spent around £7000 on a home for his almost 4ft Heterobranchus another rare cat that needs to live alone-this is the route you need to take if you realy want the goonch.

moderators can we have a sticky on lone cats?

Goonch should grow 1-2" a month so maybe not quite as fast as some of the amazon catfish species but still fast enough to become a problem in a hurry. Dieselmack kept the biggest one I can think of on the forums at somewhere in the 18-20" size range and it was with tank mates for a little bit I think but then they were removed and the cat acclimated to warmer water with very high dissolved oxygen levels. Typically these cats prefer low-mid 70's not the regular tropical 78-84 temps but Diesel had his living in tropical temps after bringing the temp up over several weeks giving the fish time to adapt.

I'd advise not getting one if you've only got a 180 and don't plan on going to a larger tank at least twice that size in the next year. Also like many said it's mostly a show piece so if you can't or won't dedicate a tank to it I'd recommend a smaller bagarius species that might permit tank mates like bagarius bagarius which stay under a foot.

thanks for the info guys .i feel that anyone can keep most fish for a certain amount of time. right now the fish is in a 20l so im sure it would be happier in my tank then it is now, does anyone see my point? its clear 75% of people can keep the fish most people buy for lifetime but obviously they want them for a bit, i still see people buying,nigers,rtc,tsn,arapima...... im sure all these people who bought every single fish isnt bulding a lake on their property for that fish, if they are and can congrats wish i could, will i upgrade to a bigger tank? yes i have eyes on a 300g when tax return comes in, i do appriciate the input as i tried seacrching and couldnt find a whole lot of info
